IRVING —

The Dallas Cowboys’ shocking run to a 12-4 record and the NFC East title has put quarterback Tony Romo and running back DeMarco Murray in the NFL Most Valuable Player conversation and coach Jason Garrett in consideration for NFL Coach of the Year.

Also in the mix for league honors is maligned owner/general manager Jerry Jones. Sports Illustrated has already named Jones its general manager of the year for remodeling an 8-8 team each of the past three years into a possible Super Bowl contender.

During a teleconference with the media in advance of Sunday’s NFC wild-card game against the Detroit Lions, Jones refused to grade himself.

But he acknowledged that the team’s front office responded well to several difficult decisions that had to be made in the off-season, including the release of defensive end DeMarcus Ware for salary cap reasons. He said exceutive vice president Stephen Jones deserves as much credit as anyone.

“I need to let you do that. I need to let others to do that,” Jones said Thursday, when asked to grade himself as a general manager. “I know that each and every decision, I know how carefully we weighed them. Every decision. I sure do give Stephen tremendous credit for a lot of the things that we have done this year.”

Not only did the Cowboys cut Ware but they let Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jason Hatcher walk in free agency and then lost middle linebacker Sean Lee for the season with a knee injury in minicamp.

Jones gets credit for talking middle linebacker Rolando McClain out of retirement to replace Lee. But he said the presence of Romo, who has had a career season, ensured they made moves to win in 2014.

The biggest and best thing the Cowboys did was draft guard Zack Martin in the first round and build the offense around a strong running game to take pressure off Romo.

“First and foremost any decision that I have made over the last several years is how we can best exploit the talents of Tony. I know that putting the right supporting cast does it,” Jones said. “He’s been our biggest edge for several years.”

Weather moves

A cold rain forced the Cowboys to alter their practice schedule Thursday, and it could do the same Friday.

With the Cotton Bowl taking place at AT&T Stadium, the Cowboys used Highland Park High School’s indoor facility.

“The rain and the cold and the field, all of those things put together, we just felt it was better for us to go over there and get a good workout inside,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “I thought our players responded to it well. Just went to work, and we had a good practice.”

It marked the first time the Cowboys have had to move a practice from Valley Ranch since the ice storm on Dec. 6, 2013. It was the 14th time the Cowboys have moved a regular-season practice since the collapse of their indoor practice facility in 2009.

“It really didn’t change much,” receiver Cole Beasley said. “We still got a lot of good work in today, and all it did was just shorten our early meetings, which is install. But everybody was focused in, and we executed everything we needed to today in practice. So it went well.”

The forecast calls for a 90 percent chance of rain Friday morning with a temperature of 39.

Practice update

Right tackle Doug Free (ankle) and linebacker Anthony Hitchens (ankle) missed practice again Thursday. They worked on the side with trainers at Highland Park.

Defensive tackle Nick Hayden (shoulder) and safety C.J. Spillman (groin) were held out.

Romo (back) returned to practice after having his usual Wednesday off day. Linebackers Dekoda Watson (hamstring) and McClain (knee/illness) had full practices after being limited Wednesday.

So I wake up this morning and feeling pretty happy. I'm going to take the wife and kids out for breakfast and see my parents before coming back home to watch some football. Then Middy goes and posts this. My day is all but ruined.......

If I hear the word "credit" one more time, I'm going to loose my breakfast. That's the most over rated term on any message board dealing with the Cowboys/Jerry/JG. That cocksucker gets credit for nothing.......this watered down fan base being happy with a Division title is disgusting. Give the crypt keeper credit if we go to the SB.

Having said that, I give the dolt more "credit" than I do Garrett (I hate myself for using the word). He made some decent moves this year that panned out, especially Ro McClain. But our drafting outside of the first round or two has been suspect and has necessitated making some of these moves. It's just that Martin and Fred have taken some of the stink out of those drafts, overall.

Maybe I'm being unfair but I spit my coffee reading how fans are happy at the season. These are young fans that are just happy to have a winning season and a playoff game because they've happened so infrequently in their lifetime. Fuck you and your decisions Jerry and fuck you for making me want to vomit and curse every time I hear your name, see your face, or hear some dolt want to hand out "credit."

Thank you DCU for allowing me to express my true vulgarity laced feelings without being banned or deleted. It's therapy for me otherwise I fear I'd take it out on my wife and kids...........

The GM of the Year for the guy who tried to draft Manziel over Martin and then openly pouted about it afterwards. Makes sense.

Or maybe it was for all of those stellar moves in free agency, Jeremy Mincey and Terrell McClain.

And the stink of trading up for Claiborne still lingers. I'm not about tho crown him GM of the year or anything close. Now, Linehan for Assistant Coach of the year or Romo for MVP......I'm on board.

Not to mention jerri coming out before the season and saying this team was in for an uphill battle which was tantamount to saying the team had no shot for this blindingly optimistic bullshit artist

This year Jerry has publicly distanced himself from the team and its decisions because he thought they were going to suck and its so deliciously ironic now that they are winning because he fucked himself right up the old wazzoo and can't credibly claim credit...LMFAO!!!

Not that this will stop him from trying, cases in point he's already actually come out and said he's proud of himself for not doing what he wanted to do & passed on Manzeil and if he knew the team would play this well he would have been dog cussing them for the last 20 years.

Its kind of like praising that alcoholic uncle for not getting drunk and ruining your daughters wedding & Its the perfect scenario as a fan, I get to enjoy the team winning and laugh at the buffoon GM as he tries to backtrack and grab the elusive credit this insecure fuck so desperately craves

About the only thing I give him credit for is his recognition that Romo pretty much *is* the franchise, and his desire to make his franchise QB happy... And his willingness to pay for top assistant coaches and premium UFAs like Leary. But he's still wasted most of his career with a project coach who needs OJT.

This year is more like the equivalent of enough monkeys jumping on enough typewriters for enough years to produce Shakespeare. In a league designed for parity more than ever, it's taken this long for things to break right enough for us to have a good year even with a franchise QB.

And that's if this team wins a couple of playoff games. Hate to say it, but at this point we don't know that this team will do more than the 2009 one.

Yeah... Zach Martin is an All Pro... and thats awesome.

You know who else is an All Pro? Bobby Wagner.

He could've been ours... except our credit deserving GM's talent evaluation skills decided Claiborn was a must have.
