Cowboys have tough decision to make on Terence Newman

Ask Cowboys fans who the team’s best cornerback was last year, and you’ll probably get “none of the above” as a response.

Terence Newman, Orlando Scandrick, and Mike Jenkins were all big disappointments. Scandrick and Jenkins will be back because they are young, talented, and reasonably cheap.

Newman, 33, is neither young nor cheap. The Cowboys’ website looks at whether the team should bring him back next season for $8 million.

The writers for the website generally think Newman should return, especially if they don’t draft a cornerback early in April. Newman is a team leader and potentially still the best cornerback on the roster.

We disagree with the thinking. For that much money, you need to be a special player. Newman’s metrics last year were among the worst in football. You should have the confidence to replace that sort of player cheaply.

Too often, the Cowboys hold on to their overpaid veterans a year longer than they should.

After figuring the amount of amount of bonus money that was pro-rated, I don't think Dallas is going to benefit any cap wise from cutting him.

If he's capable of being a better than average corner I think he stays.

I agree with that logic. When it comes down to whether he stays or goes I think Jerry takes a harder look at the books and not the player.

He's not a bad player. He was made to look bad by a defense that was weak up front and a team that wasn't prepared to play. That's why all our cornerbacks looked bad last year. Its not a coincidence.

Way overpaid but if you're not gonna save much by releasing him, I don't see the point.

You may use the poor play of the whole D as an excuse for Newman, but no way can you add Mike Jenkins to the list. He was just piss poor because he decided to quit improving himself and tried to get by on his natural gifts.

Yeah Jenkins fell apart because of his poor technique. But that seemed to happen to many on the team, both offensively and defensively.

I'm very anxious to see how this defense performs under Ryan.

Whatever bitch. That's why before last season, he had made the Pro Bowl. The entire defense stunk it up. Yes it was bad safety play and a whole lot more of Wade Phillips. Alot of players on this team had sustained injuries and I think that is in part due to poor conditioning. Way back then I was calling for them to get rid of Jurazacek and now they finally done it.

Newman's cap number this year is $11m ($8m base and $3m prorated bonus). Cutting him would put us at $6m in dead cap space, saving us $5m this year, $9m next year and $7.5m in his last two years. I think we can get an adequate replacement for much cheaper.
