Cowboys coach Jason Garrett on penalty problem: ‘We have to focus on it’

IRVING — A day after the Cowboys were hit with 13 penalties in their 38-23 victory over Philadelphia, including 10 that were committed by the defense, executive vice president Stephen Jones said the number of infractions was “inexcusable.”

During an interview on KRLD-FM (105.3), Jones explained that the problem was immediately addressed and added that head coach Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan are trying to take a proactive approach to resolve it.

“I know [Garrett] wants to do more. We talked about it,” Jones said. “We addressed it after the game. He’s going to get with Rob [Ryan] and we got to do more because whatever we’re doing is not working.”

In fact, Garrett has already taken steps to set the Cowboys straight. As Dallas was on its way to being flagged for offside and encroachment six times, Garrett pulled Kyle Orton aside and told the backup quarterback he would be delivering “800 hard counts” in practice this week.

“We have to focus on it,” Garrett said.

No team in the NFL has been flagged more than the Cowboys, who have had 74 of their 86 penalties accepted. On Sunday, six of their infractions resulted in first downs for the Eagles.

After flag frenzy, Jason Garrett says CB Morris Claiborne had good ‘learning experience’
By Rainer Sabin / Reporter
8:02 pm on November 12, 2012

IRVING — The biggest violator Sunday among the penalty-prone Cowboys was cornerback Morris Claiborne. In the Cowboys’ 38-23 victory over Philadelphia, he was flagged twice for offside, two times for defensive holding and once for pass interference. Asked if he felt like the officials were picking on him Sunday, Claiborne said,” Those guys were just doing their job.”

And Claiborne said he was just trying to do his. But head coach Jason Garrett said the rookie was a bit too assertive in his approach.

“The way their receivers were coming off the football, they were coming off really aggressive, so there was some initial contact he was having to deal with,” Garrett said. “He was trying to deal with that at the line of scrimmage as well. Sometimes you want to beat them to the punch. In each of the cases he got called for the defensive holding or for being offsides. It’s a good learning experience for him and I thought he did a good job, ironically enough of fighting through that stuff.”

Defensive penalties concern Cowboys
November, 12, 2012
By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys were penalized 13 times for 75 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. There were 10 penalties on the defense, including a team season-high five on rookie cornerback Morris Claiborne.

Defensive end Jason Hatcher was flagged twice on the opening drive and the secondary picked up six overall.

The penalties are concerning several people, including owner Jerry Jones and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

"We got to play the game right," Ryan said after the victory. "We don’t get penalized very often. That’s not who we are. We got a little excited there and we got to correct it and they can go on two (count) in this league and we thought they can go on one (count) and we’ll figure that out and get it corrected."

Jones is trying to be encouraging about a defense that knocked quarterback Michael Vick out of the game with hard hits by nose tackle Jay Ratliff and a push down by inside linebacker Ernie Sims. The Cowboys also forced a turnover, a Brandon Carr interception return for a score, and should have had three more, but Orlando Scandrick dropped two and Anthony Spencer had his pick negated by a Claiborne penalty.

"I'm concerned about focusing on offsides and concerned about some of those penalties," said Jones, whose Cowboys team was penalized four times for offsides and twice for encroachment. "They put us in an early hole. They know they’re going to hard count us (and) we got a good pass rush when we have Spencer in there with (DeMarcus) Ware and they are taught and coached to expect the hard count so we got to zero in on that more. That's not a criticism. That’s just an area we got some work to do cause I know how hard our guys work to coach our players to watch out for hard counts."

Yeah, I agree, hard counts? Whoopie!

How about an ass kickin'. Enough of this bullshit already. And don't give me this process crap either.

Either these guys are slow to learn or they're just plain stupid and can't figure it out.

Just put the headset on already.
