Closer look at the trade

Some dont like it because we sacrificed a 2nd, but according to the updated trade value chart #6 was worth 2220, #14 was 1587 and #45 was 573, so we came out a little ahead (about a 4th-5th rd pick ahead based on the slot values)

Also, New England which normally does an excellent job with their trade values gave up a 3rd to move from 27-21. Pick 21 is valued almost 1000 pts less than #6.

Garrett said Claiborne was the #2 rated player on their board behind Luck, and scouts did indeed say he was the highest rated CB since Deion in 1989. If you can get that guy at the 6th pick of the draft, its a pretty smart move.

The two best teams in the division both have excellent WR pairings and a penchent for making big plays, especially against us. As Gruden noted, we blew 4 double digit leads in the 4th qtr last year.

Having a CB tandem of Carr and Caliborne definitely helps offset some of their huge offensive advantage on us.

Polian said the Cowboys trade for Claiborne was the best move of the 1st rd.

Kiper echoed others in saying he has the best ball skills of any CB to come out in years.

It was good on paper, but in the bigger picture we still are sucky. Were burning through assets like hot cakes and still have very few good LOS players. And if Ratliff(who just got a new deal) is done then lookout.

You've seen the anemic rush when superman sits a few plays w/ that neck stinger

I get that, but Ryan says more blitz is coming and has said that since the end of the season. Getting cover guys he has confidence in makes it easier to bring more heat.

…So the Cowboys are pretty sure they fleeced the Rams to grab CB Morris Claiborne…

Ian Rapoport | Tags: Dallas Cowboys, Morris Claiborne, St. Louis Rams

Mo Claiborne is shocked... like the rest of us

The Cowboys made one of the memorable trades of the first round, sending their 14th pick and a second-rounder to the Rams for the right to select No. 6 overall. It was a bold move, and one that left them with an elite player at a key position — LSU CB Morris Claiborne.

In a wacky first day of the NFL Draft, this was old-school Jerry Jones being his usual wacky and bold self. This will be one that will be talked about for years. But the surprising thing was reaction from the Cowboys from a value standpoint.

In short, they kinda feel like they fleeced the Rams. Sure, St. Louis is Need City. But not this bad. Anyway, listen to Cowboys VP Stephen Jones talk after the news conference.

“We said, ‘Well, what we do we need to do to come up?” Stephen Jones recounted. “And the (Rams) said, ‘We may not need as much as we normally would.‘ “

If you look at the draft value chart — right here — Jones said it really should’ve been a second and a fourth to move up those eight spots. And he’s right with the math. The rookie wage scale may change things… But anyway, why was it so cheap?

Jones wasn’t sure. But they feel like they got a special player out of it.

“Maybe they just were wanting to accumulate some picks,” Jones said. “And maybe who they were after, they didn’t feel like they needed to be that high. I don’t know. I can’t answer that other than, we thought that was pretty interesting. Of course, when we went through it one more time, then we were really interested. There was one guy we would go up for and that was it. Other than that, we were keeping our picks.“

When Claiborne made it to four, Jerry Jones was on the phone with him. When Jacksonville traded up, the Cowboys knew it. But they had to make sure the blockbuster was still on. And that point, the Rams tried to squeeze a little more out of it.

“We didn’t know for sure they’d do the trade,” Stephen Jones said. “Still. All the trades are contingent on getting them done. We called and said, ‘OK, we’ll do it. And they tried to sweeten it a little bit. (Laughs). But that wasn’t the deal. And that’s what we did.“

Right. I think the good news is that the Cowboys didn't get hosed on the deal.

Personally I'd have preferred a different allocation of the resources ... but at least the Cowboys got value for their resources. Far better than reaching for a player, for example.

I'm not convinced that Claiborne is so superior to Jenkins that the Cowboys were better off upgrading Jenkins instead of picking two other high quality players who fill positions of greater need. Time will tell, of course.

You watch a lot of SEC ball, right? What do you think about Claiborne's ultimate upside as a pro?

I do watch a lot of SEC football. Claiborne is outstanding and his ball skills are a great asset.

... my reservation about selecting Claiborne doesn't involve Claiborne's skills. I'm more concerned that the NFL pass interference rules prevent great CBs from realizing their full potential. I think that the overly strict NFL pass interference rules put a ceiling on how effective an CB can be, to the extent that a potentially great CB like Claiborne can't (isn't allowed) to give you that much more than what an above average CB can give you (although I do think Claiborne will get a few extra interceptions that other CBs won't).
