Texas Longhorns targeting Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin; Chryst a candidate for Cowboys?

SportsDayDFW sports

Texas could be shifting gears toward Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin in its search for a replacement to the departed Greg Davis.

Multiple internet sites are reporting that a private plane departed Boise, Idaho at 11:14 a.m. today with a scheduled landing time in Austin at 2:18 p.m. It has yet to be confirmed whether Harsin is on board and, if so, whether he is headed to town for an interview or a potential announcement.

Boise played its bowl game before Christmas, so Texas coach Mack Brown would have had ample opportunity to interview Harsin away from Austin - and away from prying media eyes - at an undisclosed site.

From all indications, Texas seems willing to take a pass on Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst if he waits too long to decide whether he wants to come to Austin. And Chryst, from all indications, plans to interview for the head coaching vacancy at Pitt. He also could be a candidate to be the Dallas Cowboys' offensive coordinator under new head coach Jason Garrett.

He's a guy I'd love to have, but I don't think he'll come here considering how much control Garrett himself will have on the offense.

Football rumor mill: all Chryst, all the time

Madison – Knowing that our readers don't have time to surf the net 24/7 I thought I’d take a few minutes to provide the latest updates – and I mean updates – from the rumor mill involving Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst.

I’m sure you read several days ago on the Internet that Texas had hired Chryst and UW offensive line coach Bob Bostad.

Done deal, it was.

Done deal, it wasn't.

Well, Chryst is still in Madison and reports out of Texas indicate Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin be named the Longhorns' co-offensive coordinator. He will run the offense with Major Applewhite, who is the Longhorns' assistant head coach and running backs coach.

Interesting.

Meanwhile, a source has confirmed a report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Chryst’s name is on a short list of candidates for the vacant head coaching position at Pittsburgh.

However, according to multiple reports Penn State assistant Tom Bradley is currently the front-runner for that job.

Interesting.

Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced Thursday he has promoted Jason Garrett from interim to full-time head coach.

Because Garrett and Chryst are friends and because the Cowboys tried to hire Chryst once (as quarterbacks coach) you know he will be named a candidate to take a job on Garrett’s first staff.

However, because it appears Garrett plans to retain play-calling duties the person he hires as offensive coordinator likely will be in name only.

Interesting.
