A day after Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said Tony Romo often got caught trying to do too much last season, cornerback Brandon Carr mentioned doing the same in his first year with the Cowboys.

“I got caught up in trying to save the world, so to speak,” Carr said Friday on 1310 The Ticket’s “BaD Radio” show [KTCK-AM]. “Trying to play every position. Trying to go outside of my skill set to go out there and make plays, and trying to force things.

“When you force things, only bad things happen from that. I learned a hard lesson during the middle of the season. I had a rough patch and I tell everybody about it. I was able to give myself a reality check in the mirror and just get back to playing my football, get back to basics and fundamentals.”

Carr was visibly angered after allowing Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall to finish with seven grabs for 138 yards and a touchdown during a Week 4 loss. He stopped mid-answer during post game interviews and shouted in frustration. Carr improved in the weeks that followed and attributed it to getting his swagger back.

Last week, Carr got a chance to meet face-to-face with new Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. The 26-year-old said he was “all for” what Kiffin told him about the new scheme the Cowboys would be running next season. Not a surprise that Carr would say that. After all, three games into his first season with the Cowboys, the corner who inked a $50-milion contract in March was lined up at safety because of so many injuries in Dallas’ secondary.

In Kiffin’s scheme, Carr will be asked to play a lot more zone coverage than he did under Rob Ryan, something Carr says is necessary with the current league rules allowing little contact with receivers. Carr added that playing man-to-man coverage for an entire game allows the NFL’s elite quarterbacks to easily pick apart a secondary.

“In years past you could go up and challenge the guys and be aggressive and beat them up all the way down the field,” Carr said. “But now the game has changed so much that if you even look at them sometimes, they’re throwing the flag.”

Carr, who intercepted eight passes in four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, was responsible for three of the Cowboys’ seven picks last year.

Always something after a guy has a poor season.

Just call it like it was, you didn't play like you expected.

Assess the situation for it is and address it so it doesn't happen again.

Oh OK. Terrible analogy for someone who plays football for a living. Just say you had a bad season and you played like crap. We all saw it.

He didn't play like crap Jon. He just didn't quite live up to the hype. But he had game changing plays in our late season rally.

Terrence Newman was crap.

Didn't expect him to save the world but for 50mil I envisioned more than 3 interceptions and him trying not to impersonate Terence Newman.

You say tomato. I say tom-ah-to.

He played like crap with a few dashes of good plays sprinkled in at the end of the year.

Overall, he played like crap.

And Terence Newman was a 25 year old rookie who never lived up to expectations and was resigned only because he was drafted by Jerry.

He was on with babe the week Ryan was fired and didn't make any excuses for himself.
