Matt Johnson Aiming To Return After Bye Week
by One.Cool.Customer

Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com writes that Mana Silva's release could be a sign the Cowboys are confident Matt Johnson could be sufficiently recovered from his injuries to get his first NFL snaps after the bye week.

According to Kavner, Johnson is already running and working out, and looks to be ready to contribute. Johnson missed most of training camp with an hamstring injury, then suffered another hamstring injury on his other leg in a preseason game against the Rams. Jonson said the second injury could have been caused by a back injury that started bothering him a few weeks ago.

With so many injury setbacks, Johnson is understandably cautious about his status:

“Each day is an improvement,” Johnson said. “We’re kind of just taking it day by day, I guess. I’m tired of looking in the future and having some freak thing happen again. As long as I’m progressing, it’s good.”

Johnson is appreciative of the fact that the Cowboys have held on to him this long, but also knows that he'll have to soon start repaying the Cowboys for their faith in him:

“It means that once I get healthy I have to prove myself, for sure,” Johnson said. “It definitely means a lot that they have that faith in me.”

I'm still skeptical he'll be much help this year on defense, but if he is it'd obviously be a huge boost.

yeah, its smart to draw conclusions one month into the career of someone you've never seen play

He should be a big help on special teams and hopefully at safety.

Bryan Broaddus keeps saying he will contribute because he is so smart. He has made the point a couple of times now that he knows the defense and his responsibilities as a safety when he has practiced.

He mentioned how the team is impressed with his ability to know as much as he does without ever being out there and thinks that is why they kept him around.....just needs to be physically healthy because he is good mentally.

he could be a big boost to special teams at least down the stretch...

I hope Broaddus is right. It would be nice to finally see some quality and dependable safety play.

For some reason this just struck me funny.

It's like after years and years of drafting idiots the team actually gets impressed when a player can read.

Seriously though, if he knows his responsibilities he can definitely help.
