Dez Bryant: Critics expected me done after three seasons, 'but I'm at seven and running'
By Jon Machota
OXNARD, Calif. -- Make no mistake, Dez Bryant still hears the critics. Entering his seventh NFL season, it continues to fuel his fire.
"I'm not going to jump too far into it but I've done killed a lot of them doubters," Bryant said Wednesday while being interviewed by Michael Irvin for the NFL Network. "A lot of them expected me to be out at three [seasons] but I'm at seven and running. I had to throw that in."
Irvin started laughing, then responded: "You got to let it go, man."
"That's what keeps the motor going," Bryant said. "A lot of maturity came along with it, that's by learning and dealing with certain things and understanding how important my job really is."
While Bryant was being interviewed near midfield, Tony Romo was about 100 yards away, answering questions about the team's star receiver.
"He's evolved in many different areas, in his personal life, you've seen a ton of growth, and he's always loved football," Romo said. "You can say he's a pro now the way he goes about it. He's just a great guy and he's a great teammate. You'd be hard-pressed to find one guy on our football team who doesn't love Dez Bryant as a teammate. That's a really special thing to have."
Bryant and Romo are looking to put the injury-filled 2015 season behind them. Each day in Oxnard they appear to be knocking off more rust. Over the last several practices, vintage Romo to Bryant plays have increased.
"I think the most beautiful thing about us is the way we've been so precise," Bryant said. "We know exactly what we can do. It's all about sharpening the tools and making sure we're absolutely correct when it comes [Week 1] Sept. 11.
"I think the pace that we're going is absolutely right. We've been here before. It's all about making sure everything is going correctly."
Unlike Bryant, Romo was a full participant throughout offseason workouts. Both have talked several times about getting back on the same page and how long it would take.
Romo seems to think Bryant is right on pace.
"Dez has done a good job," Romo said. "He continues to get better every day. I think you're seeing the flashes of him. Each day it gets 20 minutes longer where he's able to continue to perform at that level. I think by the end of this week he's going to be Dez Bryant again, if he's not already there.
"It's all about getting yourself in great physical condition and pushing yourself every day. We know how talented he is."
