IRVING — One of the biggest questions at Valley Ranch entering Sunday’s season opener is who will be starting at the three linebacker spots.

Bruce Carter helped clear some of it up Monday, saying he’ll be one of the three.

Which spot?

Carter says he’ll be on the strongside with Justin Durant on the weakside and Rolando McClain in the middle.

“I think SAM,” Carter said. “JD is at WILL and Rolando is at MIKE. And then I play WILL in nickel.”

During the early portion of practice that was open to reporters, Carter was working at strongside with Durant on the weakside and rookie Anthony Hitchens in the middle. McClain was not participating in all drills after tweaking his right knee early in practice.

Carter played on the strongside last season but entered training camp as the favorite to win the starting weakside job. The move means instead of being protected by the three-technique defensive tackle, Carter will be more focused on setting the edge.

Regardless of where he’s lining up, Carter doesn’t seem too concerned.

“As far as our game plan, I feel like it’s black and white,” Carter said. “We’re just going to have to line up and it’s kind of old school where we just line up and just beat the man in front of you.

“That’s something we’re going to pride ourselves on, being physical and going out there stripping and making interceptions and getting the ball back to our offense.”
