The Ticket's Bob Sturm joins us at 4 p.m. Thursday, but ask your questions now and he will have them when he arrives.
Hi Bob, with all the draft chatter do you think the Cowboys will draft a QB this year and if they do, who and what round would you expect them to pull the trigger on a QB .
Matthew Marlboro
I think there are at a spot where we certainly should not be surprised if they pick one. But, we should also understand a reality of that idea - in the NFL, if you want a QB of substance and consequence, then you should know that 90% of the time, that guy is picked in the Top 50-75 picks. That means the top of the 3rd round. Tom Brady and Tony Romo get mentioned quite a bit as the exceptions to that rule, but without fail, any QB worth his salt beyond those few were almost all taken in the Top 50 picks of their year. That means, if you are looking for a backup - take him when you want. But, if you are seriously looking for Tony Romo's successor, then you better be ready to take that QB in Round 1. And this does not appear to be the year for that.
If Todd Gurley were available at #27, would you take him?
In a heartbeat, without hesitation. I would run up to the podium the second that pick #26 went off the board. I would not take phone calls, I would not debate it. In fact, right now, March 26, is the time to have the conversation of "what are we going to do if Gurley is there? If the answer is "no", then they are either privy to medical information I am not, or they are not watching the same games. I don't think he is there at 27, but if he is, I have no issues with doing that immediately.
What are your thought on Kevin Johnson,CB, Wake Forrest and if the Cowboys should draft him if he is available at 27 in the 1st round of the draft?
I think Kevin Johnson is an tremendous player. Here is my summary of his profile from when I wrote him up a month ago: "This player is high on my board as a guy who I feel great about. He has the mentality and the makeup that I look for in a corner, and unlike Peters from Washington, he is far more ready to attack the line of scrimmage and is a team defender which make his abilities far more useful to me. I am confident that this player has the skill-set that is required to deal with the challenges that are ahead and he has all the attributes you are looking for in a 1st round corner. He also looks able to contribute on special teams and provide depth. If you are Dallas and in need for a scheme fit with tremendous upside and looks to be a real value, I believe this player would be pretty high on the list if he falls to #27. Easily, my 2nd favorite corner to this point of the study." To read it all, check it out here:
I have never been a scout or a NFL General Manager, but I am willing to watch a ton of football. By watching about 200 snaps of each prospect, we…
He is an impressive player.
Thank you for hosting today's cat, Bob. Love the Boys are doing. I have a strong feeling the Cowboys will pick RB Jay Ajayi in the first two rounds. Great talent. I think he brings a LOT to the tabel. Inside and outside runner. He is the most complete back in the Draft in my opinion.
Allow me to once again quote from his draft profile: "I might have tipped my hands early, but I really like this guy to a point that if there was one guy you might cheer to fall to #60 in Round 2, this could be him. He can just do it all and looks like a Day 1 starter who can pass protect, receive, and run inside or outside. He looks the part of a legitimate NFL starter who will compete for the 3rd guy off the board. I don’t see a lot to not like about him and he has a competitive level about him that is very admirable and contagious. I continue to say that this is a group of running backs that is as deep and talented as many of us can recall, but Ajayi is a quality player that deserves to be in that conversation for 3rd best behind Gurley and Gordon." - I am not sure he gets to #60, so he would be one of those main candidates for Dallas if they trade back from #27 to get say a 2nd and 3rd round pick. Maybe he or Duke Johnson would be the type of guy to go between #35-#45. Just guessing, but that feels right to me.
Bob, draft is boooooring. Let's talk strategy! With DeMarco and Callahan gone, Garrett mentioned we will need to find more dirty runs from others. Which is nice in theory, but reality may be different. What do you see strategically different coming from the offense this year? Do you think it involves a touch more passing and going back to the 11 formation?
The draft is anything but boring, but ok, let's talk strategy. If you are considering 11 vs 12 personnel, the real discussion we need to have is whether we like our 3rd WR (Cole Beasley or Devin Street) more than we like our 2nd TE (Gavin Escobar). I am sure that this offers different game situations to consider and we need to think carefully about the ramifications of replacing a 6'6 player with a 5'8 player (approx) and losing 100 pounds but gaining a matchup issue inside. Do I expect the Cowboys to run the ball for that many yards and carries? Well, maybe not, but it worked wonderfully and the if they can get a legit RB1 in, I don't know why I would get away from it until the league shows they can slow me down. The league hasn't come close to that yet.
If there were no salary cap and no profit sharing, would the cowboys win it all every year?
They would be in the mix for sure. With their endless revenues, I expect the Cowboys would be the Yankees with the best roster and the best cash reserves to try to take over the league. Others may join them, but the biggest thing between the Cowboys and a dynasty is simply the way the sport and the league are set up. If this was baseball or English soccer, the Dallas Cowboys may win the title 3 times every decade.
Kendricks, Coleman,
Gurley, Darby
Johnson, McKinney
Who is better fit for Cowboys and why?
Hmmm. RB you have me Gurley and Coleman. I like Gurley more than any RB in the draft. I don't think Coleman is ideal between the tackles for me. CB - Kevin Johnson and Ronald Darby? I like them both very much, but Johnson is more complete. And LB - Benardrick McKinney vs Eric Kendricks? Kendrick easy. Kendrick is a fast and capable man in open spaces and McKinney looks like a 2-down slow, between the tackles MLB. I will go Kendricks any day of the week.
I know the Hardy stuff has been beaten to death and back but how will the league justify the suspension everyone is expecting when the conviction was vacated (whatever wording you want, I know it wasn't reversed persay) and the actual FACTS surrounding the case don't seem to implicate him in any way? You'd think they'd need EITHER a conviction OR other incriminating evidence. I know the sentiment is Goodell HAS to do something, but this is a man's livelihood..you'd think an explanation/justification is in order
I am under the impression that they are conducting their own investigation with their own search for evidence and are not worried about the courts outcome that fell apart when the girl took the settlement. I am not studying this process closely, but if that is the case, it seems like a business can come to a conclusion that is different and under the "Employment Conduct" policy. Far different than law enforcement burdens.
So you're saying if Gurley is gone, but Melvin Gordon is there, they trade back?!
Man, I dont know...Gordon may be a "take the league by storm" guy year 1.
No, no, no. I don't trade back if Gurley or Gordon are there. If I gave that impression I better be more clear. I love Melvin Gordon and actually think he is the more perfect fit for the Cowboys, but also think his ceiling is slightly lower than Gurley. I would be tickled to get Gordon, but like Gurley, I am pessimistic about #27 being a place that offers those choices. Here is my summary on Gordon's profile: The question that everyone wants to know is whether he rates higher or lower than Todd Gurley. I would argue that due to the uncommon size and speed combo of Gurley, I would lean in that direction if all things were equal. But an ACL injury to Gurley is nothing to ignore, and that might push some teams to Gordon. I think that for a team like the Cowboys he fits like a hand in a glove because he is ready to plug and play and also has been running these plays for years. He is a home-run hitter who may not have all of the boxes checked on the checklist, but he is absolutely a top RB quality about him. There is no question that people are leery of Wisconsin running backs, but this guy should not be compared to Ron Dayne or Montee Ball. He is a legitimate stud and a clear 1st round talent.
If the team resigns RoMac, doesn't that drop LB significantly in terms of pressing needs for the draft? I know him and Lee aren't guaranteed 16 game guys but it still has to shift relative to needs like CB and DL right?
Yes, but I am not sure I think he is coming back. Honestly, the whispers have been nonexistent with Ro McClain news recently and I know they mentioned this week they still think they are in the mix for him, but it sure sounds like they have a number and maybe he has a drastically different one. He surely saw Bruce Carter's new deal: 4 yr, $17m - (Just year 1 guaranteed) and Justin Durant: 3 years/$10.8m (with just $1.25m guaranteed) and tried to set his own market price. I will say this - the market prices for non-pass rushing LBs is amazingly low around the league. It is a buyer's market.
What are the chances Shaq Thompson falls to the Cowboys and they take him? I know they were very high on Shazier last year. He could be a great weak side OLB used in coverage downs. Keep reading he is dropping due to size, but is a freak athlete and a good football player.
I think he could slide and could be available. The trouble is, I am not sure where Shaq makes sense. If I want this year's Shazier, I might be looking more at Eric Kendricks and Paul Dawson more. Here is my summary on Shaq: I see the appeal and the highlights show him running back another interception or fumble recovery for a touchdown. There is something to be said for a ball hawk who always finds the ball and knows how to get it and then what to do with it. I also love the idea that he is so versatile in what he does. But, if I am going to spend a 1st round pick, there better be one position in particular where I think he can be a pro-bowl player for me, or I should keep shopping, and since I am not great at imagining his future, based on his present tense, I would not say I see the sure-fire 1st round prospect that others see. This would require a bit of development and patience to make him the LB you are looking for. There is a lot to like here, but I would try to wait a round and that means someone else is going to take him.
Do you think the plan is to go with a combination of Hayden, Brent and Bishop at the 1 technique next year? Are the SAM LB and the Nose the two positions in the Marinelli defense which are the lowest on the totem pole of importance?
I think there is value in the 1-tech in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, depending on how things slide. I think they are ok there with those guys, but upgrading would not be that difficult. I would say if you rank the 11 defensive spots from most to least important, it would go like this: 3-tech, Will LB, RDE, CB1, CB2, FS, MLB, LDE, SS, 1-tech, Sam. So, yes, I guess I agree with that.
If you had to name your kid after an NFL quarterback, what would be your last choice? Other than Quincy.
Wow, that is a very odd question. Eli? Cutler? I guess I have no real idea. Who would name their kid after a Quarterback?
Valley Ranch seems to suggest this offseason is meant to spread asset allocation more evenly across both sides of the ball. That being the said, can we trust that this thinking won’t be thrown out the window to chase Peterson?
I would say the % chances that Adrian Peterson will be a Dallas Cowboy are currently quite low. However, with Jerry wanting AD and AD wanting Jerry, I am not sure we can say it is 0% until at least July. It is a low chance, but certainly, we would be foolish as experienced observers of Jerry Jones to argue that there is no possibility whatsoever.
How many 3-4 Cover 2 defenses made the playoffs last year? -- Why do the Cowboys get pegged with "that defense doesn't work in todays NFL", while other teams don't?
The Tampa 2? I am not worried about that at all. The Cowboys don't do much of that to be honest as they mix their coverages plenty. I would argue that the Cowboys play a scheme that is not that dissimilar to the Seattle scheme - although they do not have the same personnel for sure. 3-4 teams have won most of the last several Super Bowls, so they will always look at that, but when you consider the Cover-2/Cover-3 differences in the game today, it is difficult to suggest that any trends are clear and defined. Furthermore, most teams do not run the same coverage that much. Everyone is mixing it up.
Your best guess on Brandon Carr's status in September:
1.) On the Cowboys' roster at his current salary
2.) On the Cowboys' roster at a reduced salary
3.) Not on the Cowboys' roster
2. He has all of the leverage now. He has more than most people are admitting later. But, I think there is a happy medium to where we currently are. The Cowboys cannot cut him and find another corner who can play 1,000 downs unless they want to draft a CB in the 1st and even then they are risking plenty. I keep Carr and maybe extend him a year to get his 2015 number down.
Outside of Murray, do any of the players the Cowboys lost in free agency concern you? Can they replace Harris, Parnell, Carter, Durant, Moore, Spencer and Selvie?
They all come with levels of concern from a replacement situation. I am now down a return man and a very key special team piece in Harris - a very valuable swing tackle in Parnell - 2 tremendous LB options where my depth is much thinner - Moore has always been steady in the secondary as depth - and Spencer and Selvie have both had their moments (although both were awful quiet in 2014). That is a lot of foot soldiers to lose.
It was rare to see so many players traded when free agency opened up this year. If it happens, it seems most common during the Draft (players for picks). With the free agency surge of player trades, do you anticipate more player trades come draft day? --Might this be when Adrian Peterson is moved?
We cannot rule that out for sure. There is always trade activity on draft weekend and Peterson staying in Minnesota doesn't seem likely unless there is a contract situation to make everyone feel better. I think Arizona might still be the likeliest outcome.
Make or break year for Sean Lee? Exceptional talent but the "injury prone & cant be trusted" label is growing on him, and fast.
It is certainly vital that he plays 14 games, minimum. Now that they are speaking of the Will LB spot, we shall see if it plays to his strength like they anticipated it would. I sure hope he has a big year. It was really amazing they had the team year they did without him.
Hey Bob, I know you were a big Ro Mclain fan, as was I early, but I thought he became average on this team as the season wore on..do you agree? I know there were some injury bugs but do you think his heart may not be in it?
He is impossible to figure out. I don't think I know much about what makes him tick or makes him happy. But, I do think that aside from the concussions, he was more than fine. But, they seem hesitant to commit too much to him.
Any CB Visits from the Draft for The Boys you know of ?
To this point, no, not really. It has been tons of RBs and linemen so far. A ways to go
