The new Super Bowl video comes out every spring, and somehow each year the Cowboys are not in it.
Once Jerry Jones ran through all the players Jimmy Johnson accumulated for him with clever drafts and the greatest trade in NFL history when he unloaded Herschel Walker on the Vikings, the Super Bowl drought for the former America’s Team began and has yet to end.
Johnson was so good with personnel that he proved Jones right when the owner/general manager said 500 coaches could win the Super Bowl with the players on the Cowboys roster. Barry Switzer, a college coach who could have been no higher than No. 450 on the list, came out of retirement and won the Super Bowl in his second year on the job.
That was the 1995 season when the Cowboys won their third title in four years. That was also the last time the Cowboys made it to the Super Bowl.
That is pretty funny.
I asked Eli Manning on Wednesday if he knew the last time the Cowboys were in the Super Bowl. “With Aikman in the ’90s,” he said. “It’s tough getting there. That is part of football.”
Even the perennial loser Cardinals, Saints, Bucs and Panthers have been to the Super Bowl more recently than the Cowboys, who host the Giants on Sunday at Jerry World.
Unless Johnson comes back to replace the hopelessly overmatched Jason Garrett, or Roger Staubach or Troy Aikman can find a way back onto the field to replace Tony Romo, the quarterback just good enough to keep his job but bad enough in the clutch to get coaches fired, then the ’Boys are not on their way to the Super Bowl this season, either.
The Super Bowl has been played 16 times since the Cowboys beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XXX when Neil O’Donnell kept throwing the ball to Cowboys cornerback Larry Brown.
The Jets were so impressed that one month later they signed O’Donnell to a five-year, $25 million free agent contract. Eleven different NFC teams and seven different AFC teams have been to the Super Bowl since the Cowboys’ last trip.
It’s so tough to win for the overbearing Jones that not even Bill Parcells came close to the Super Bowl in his four years coaching the ’Boys. It’s the only one of Parcells’ four coaching jobs where he didn’t win a playoff game.
There’s a whole generation of football fans wondering what that America’s Team stuff is all about. Sixteen years is a long time.
“That’s definitely surprising to me with the talent that has gone through those doors,” Mathias Kiwanuka said. “I’m sure they would like to make this year their year.”
What’s incredible is that the Patriots have been to six Super Bowls in that time. The Giants, Packers and Steelers are next with three appearances.
There is no disputing the Cowboys’ popularity, but it has more to do with the fans rooting for the uniform rather than the team in the uniform. If NFL Films could do it all over again, America’s Team just would not fit. How about America’s Misfits?
Aikman won three Super Bowls for the Cowboys, but said fans of the team come to games to be seen.
“I don’t think Dallas has ever really had a great home-field advantage,” Aikman said. “What I’ve heard is that, ‘Wow, they really lost home field advantage when they left Texas Stadium.’ Texas Stadium really wasn’t that different. Having played playoff games in Texas Stadium, that stadium was rocking, it was great.
“But when we would play in Philadelphia, New York and walk out of the tunnel, I would have to be yelling at the top of my lungs for guys to hear me. And you get on the plane for the flight home and your head would be pounding, you wouldn’t have a voice and that’s just the way that it was. There was no way you could go down there near the goal line and use a hard count in an opposing stadium. And yet in Texas Stadium, teams did it all the time.”
The Cowboys do play in the nicest stadium in the league with the coolest video board, but Jones hardly fostered the image of the Cowboys as tough guys by opening a Victoria’s Secret PINK store at Cowboys Stadium earlier this month featuring merchandise with the Cowboys name and logo.
“We think it’s as cute as a bug and very in place to show it and sell it out there,” Jones said on a Dallas radio station.
The Giants are 3-0 at Cowboys Stadium. In the only playoff game played between the teams, the Giants went into old Texas Stadium in 2007 when Dallas was the NFC’s No. 1 seed and eliminated the ’Boys on the way to winning the Super Bowl.
In fact, since winning their last Super Bowl, the Cowboys have made the playoffs just seven times. Their playoff record is 2-7 and they haven’t been past the divisional round. The Cowboys are in their 53rd season and this is their longest stretch without a Super Bowl appearance.
Well, at least nobody else has Victoria’s Secret next to the nacho concessions.
