IRVING, Texas – Let me start the post this way: I love Dan Graziano’s work. Somehow he keeps track of four teams in the NFC East and seems to be able upset fans of all four at the same time, so he’s doing something right.

But I think Dan is over the top in the view that the Cowboys must take an offensive lineman with their first-round pick. In today’s #bloggermock, Dan picked Alabama tackle D.J. Fluker with the 18th pick.

Fluker may well be the Cowboys' pick Thursday, but the vibe is they don’t have Fluker that high on their board.

Here’s what the Cowboys should do: take the best player regardless of the position.

If at No. 18 the Cowboys’ draft board has an offensive lineman as the 29th-best player -- and that’s not how they configure their draft board, by the way, but just go with it for now -- don’t reach on that player.

When you reach, you’re taking a lesser player and end up with a lesser roster overall.

In a draft that does not have the “sexy” skill players, I don’t see one of the team’s top line targets making it to No. 18.

The Cowboys have taken one offensive lineman in the first round since 1981 and that was Tyron Smith two years ago. They have found players like Larry Allen, Flozell Adams and Andre Gurode in the second round.

But the Cowboys' problems along the offensive line are not because they haven’t taken enough first-round picks. The problem is they can’t identify offensive lineman in the early and middle rounds where other teams have.

Despite the last year-plus, Doug Free (fourth, 2007) had a decent enough run, but the Cowboys have received nothing or next to nothing from David Arkin (fourth, 2011), Robert Brewster (third, 2009), James Marten (third, 2007), Jacob Rogers (second, 2004) and Stephen Peterman (third, 2004).

For months the Cowboys agonize over their draft board. They try to fit everybody in where they believe they should go. If you just skip that process on draft day, then you have wasted energy, time and money.

There is no doubt that the Cowboys have a need along the offensive line. There’s no doubt they should take an offensive lineman at No. 18 -- if he's the best player.

But “should” and “must” are two different things.

Here’s my must: stick to the board.

Babe mentioned last night that there are 5 elite lineman in this draft and the cowboys want one and might need to go up and get one.

I hate this "we'll take the BPA" bullshit. If the BPA when they pick is a QB or CB, we all know they ain't drafting him.

Is Babe on crack? D linemen don't win games? We have six measly picks but will trade up for a guard?

Absolutely true.

And yet it wouldn't surprise me if Jerry picked the BWPA (Best Wow Player Available), again.

babe has been begging for lineman, qb's, rb's and wr for years now.

always complains because we spend all our top resources on defense. High picks, high priced free agents...its always defense.

his point...I think anyway, is that its an offensive league and u need to score points in the passing game.....so load up the talent on offense.

always cites the 90s cowboys.

You're right bb, that is an insane comment.

Must be that 1) he's biased as a former QB, and 2) he's campaigning a bit for an OL to make his buddy's offense look better.

he has been saying this same thing since parcells was the head coach. Nothing to do with garrett.

he has gone on and on about not drafting skill positions on offense high in the draft since we signed Bledsoe.

hey, I'm all for taking a guard or even Fluker if he's still there, but he's nuts if he thinks for we're trading up for any of these guys.

yea I agree on that. If we trade up for a guard....god help us.

Again though, he has been begging for offensive players in the draft for about 6 years or so now.

Yeah, I don't want to lose any picks regardless. Stay at 18 or move down and gain more picks. The more the merrier.

We hardly ever hit on any of our picks after the 4th round anyway.. Who cares if we have them?

Realistically, if we come away with one of those top linemen, a starting safety, and a pass rusher along the dline I think we've done as good as we could with Jerry.

I have no problem with going up a few picks for one of them guards.

If it means we can gain another second or third round pick, I would trade out of 18. There's a lot of value in those two rounds.

We could gain three or more starters from a trade like that. Now, if Warmack and Cooper were available then I'd probably stay put.

Tyron Smith? Sean Lee and Bruce Carter?

Hell for years we took mostly DL's with the early picks. I'm not sure why so many think all Jerry does is sit there and think about drafting a WR or something when the fact is, he doesnt.
