Archer: Anthony Spencer hits double-digit sacks

Anthony Spencer hits double-digit sacks
December, 17, 2012

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

ARLINGTON, Texas -- When the Cowboys drafted Anthony Spencer in the first round in 2007 they envisioned a great sack tandem with DeMarcus Ware.

It finally took hold.

With 1.5 sacks Sunday of Ben Roethlisberger, Spencer has 10 sacks in a season for the first time in his career.

“I’m happy about it, but I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing,” Spencer said “I’m not going to change much. Trying to win games, that’s all that matters to me.”

With DeMarcus Ware’s 11.5 sacks the Cowboys have two players with 10 or more sacks in the same season since Ware (14) and Greg Ellis (12.5) accomplished the feat in 2007. It is the fifth time in franchise history the Cowboys has had two defenders with 10 or more sacks.

Ware’s half sack ups his career total to 111, unofficially tying him for second in team history with Randy White. Harvey Martin is the leader with 114 but Ware is recognized as the franchise leader because sacks weren’t recognized as an official stat until 1982.

You know you take Ware for granted when you hear he has 11.5 sacks and you're like "meh"

I remember when Tony Tolbert had 12 sacks in 1996 and for a few years I was wondering if we would ever get a player like that again.

I still believe Greg Ellis would have been a 15 sack a year guy had he not broken his leg. He was absolutely dominant before that happened. He had an interception and a fumble return that year for like 98 and 97 yards a peice.

I always thought Greg Ellis would've been a Strahan player if not for that injury (and not playing in Zimmer's faggy scheme).

Yes, Anthony Spencer is the No. 1 3-4 OLB in the NFL this season, per @PFF. DeMarcus Ware ranks 6th.

It was the scheme more than the broken leg...the year after it happened he had the rod in there and you could tell he was not the same, but afterward he got better and better. That was also why they moved Ellis to the other side that season, so he could push off on the other leg.

I always though Ellis was very underrated. people couldnt get over the Moss thing, but if you look at the 1st round of that draft Ellis was one of the betetr players drafted that yer in either oft he first two rounds. So was Flozelle Adams

I really hope we don't re-sign him.

Maybe he has 2 years of great play somewhere else, but he had his chance here. Franchise him again if we need to but don't give him a long term deal.

I hope we let him walk too. Maybe if he was 2 years younger and had done this 2 years straight. It's obvious he just turned things on for a big contract. He'll relax and revert back to his old form. No thanks.

I'm with you guys. I don't know how I feel about paying 2, 30 year old football players 80 mil each.

Outside of Lee he has been our best defensive player this year. Hell yeah I bring him back. I, at the very least, tag him.

And possibly go 3 years if we can make room.

Apocolypse is definitely arriving. We agree.

They should just change "playing well during your contract year...only to tank thereafter" to "pulling a Spencer".

This guy gave no effort for years with a HOF player on the other end. No savvy GM will touch him, but he'll end up making multi-millions for a shitty organization like Jville or Oakland and we'll never hear from him again.

I would re-sign him for 3 years $25 million, $11 million guaranteed.

I don't even think we can afford to franchise him. His tag would be ~$12.5 mil. They are already over $130 mil in salaries + $5 for Austin's bullshit. I'm not even sure what the new cap number will be. I don't see any reason it would increase much more from the $120 mil, and they still need to pay draft picks.

The Free contract looks so terrible now. Scandrick, Connor and Sensy's contracts are also very fucking dumb, and they still have a wave of players (Carter, Romo, Lee, etc.) to deal with soon too. After those contracts are finalized, 2014 will not be looking much better.

The two best choices:

1) Let Spencer walk and draft a DE early (and hope he doesn't suck)
2) Give him a bullshit Vick-style 5 year deal that's really only guaranteed for 3, primarily just to shut Jon up.

This cap situation means no big FAs for sure. bb's gf will be pushing 12-13 years old by the time they even have money to address this shitty oline.
