Another sign DeMarcus Ware was right choice

IRVING, Texas – Rather quietly this week Shawne Merriman announced his retirement after eight seasons with San Diego and Buffalo.

There was a time when people wondered if the Cowboys made the right decision in drafting DeMarcus Ware over Merriman.

For this, you can – wait for it – thank Jerry Jones.

It is easy to bash Jones for everything that has gone wrong with the Cowboys, but the decision to draft Ware with the 11th overall pick in 2005 was his. When the Cowboys came to work for the first round of the draft that year, many inside the building thought Merriman would have been the Cowboys pick.

Bill Parcells always liked bigger school guys and Maryland is just a little bigger than Ware’s Troy.

But Jones went with Ware, even after Parcells said he would rather take Marcus Spears with the 11th pick. Parcells was not exactly pleased at the time but then the Cowboys got Spears with the 20th pick and the coach’s mood brightened.

This isn’t to say Parcells didn’t want or didn’t like Ware. In his first comments after the selection he compared Ware to Lawrence Taylor and throwing around compliments was not exactly something Parcells did a lot.

But Merriman was named the NFL’s rookie of the year in 2005 and led the league with 17 sacks in 2006, but he was suspended four games for violating the banned substance policy. He added another 12.5 sacks in 2007 but would have only six the rest of his career in large part because of injuries.

Ware, meanwhile has been named to the Pro Bowl seven straight years, is the team’s official all-time leader in sacks (111) and should close in on the unofficial record (114)in 2013. Ware has been the consummate professional throughout his career, not missing a game and playing even while hurt.

His is coming back from shoulder surgery and switching to defensive end as the Cowboys move to the 4-3 in 2013.

You didn’t need to hear about Merriman’s retirement this week to know the Cowboys made the right back decision in 2005.

For two seasons it looked like we made the wrong decision. Turns out we me made the right one.

Didn't Merriman go to Texas, though?

A more interesting (but unanswerable) question is whether the Cowboys would have been better off with Stephen Jackson.

With Ware, the team has made it to the playoffs in only 3 of 8 seasons and managed but 1 playoff win.

Would the Cowboys have been even less successful had Jackson been picked in 2004? IMO, probably not.

And, if Romo had a better and more reliable running game over the years, the case could be made that the team would have been more successful.

Yes, I would much rather have had Stephen Jackson than Julius Jones. I was never impressed with Juilius even when he had those 200 yard games. It all went downhill from his rookie season and he was running into the backs of his offensive lineman like it was no one's business.

Odd post of the day...How did you dream up that one? Ware or Jackson? I do not get it.

Ware was taken with the Cowboys original pick.

Spears was taken with the Bills pick at 20.

So your questions ought to be... would the Cowboys have been better off with Ware and Stephen Jackson?

:lol

I believe so.

Parcells said that they "needed" Spears for the 3-4. It isn't definite that the Cowboys would have taken Ware over Spears had the Cowboys had only one pick in that 1st round.

Better off with......

11th Demarcus Ware

20th Aaron Rodgers

Would have made it an unbelievable draft class.

Of course we'd still have him. Parcells isn't in the business of passing on Lawrence Taylor clones

Well according that story up there, and the ones I've read about it numerous times before, that's exactly what he would have done since he wanted Spears at #11 instead of Ware if we weren't going to draft Merriman. So there is a chance that he would have passed on Ware at #11 if that was our only draft pick that year in the first round, unless of course Jerry stepped in and forced him to go with Ware.

Yeah I'm sure the same guy who Jimmy had to publicly call out about embellishing his GM role knew EXACTLY who to pick like his cronies have leaked out.

I'm sure JJ was sent to pick up dunkin donuts while Parcells was picking Ware.

No.

I had a hard drive die on me in 06 that had a bunch of awesome stuff from 04 and 05 on there.

I had this great interview at tony romo's apartment with his roommates in the summer of 04 by fix 4's Nita wiggins.

Plus the 04 and 05 draft stuff and the 03 and 04 pre season. The televised scrimmage with the texans from 03 would be fun to watch, carter was god awful. I remember sitting there finding out Vick was out for the year that night.

I cried a little when that drive died on me.

Interestingly enough, Spears was the 1st and last time we tried to solve the issues of building a credible 3-man front. We tried to mish and mash it the rest of the way.

We took canty and Ratliff the next day and signed Jason ferguson in march.

We had a more than credible line in 05 and 06.
