NFC East

Dallas Cowboys

CThe Cowboys were the most hotly debated team after the first round. Did they get enough in a trade with the 49ers? Did they reach to take Frederick? They rebounded nicely by taking the best available the rest of the way, but Monte Kiffin’s defense didn’t get much help. They missed out on the top safeties, and depth along the defensive line remains a concern.

1 (31) Travis Frederick, c, Wisconsin.

2 (47) Gavin Escobar, te, San Diego State.

3 (74) Terrance Williams, wr, Baylor.

3 (80) J.J. Wilcox, db, Georgia Southern.

4 (114) B.W. Webb, db, William & Mary.

5 (151) Joseph Randle, rb, Oklahoma State.

6 (185) DeVonte Holloman, lb, South Carolina.

New York Giants

BThe Giants filled some huge needs without reaching. Their top needs were offensive tackle and defensive end, and they got Pugh and Moore in the first three rounds. No one drafts pass rushers better than GM Jerry Reese. Moore, who had 26.5 sacks in three seasons, and DT Hankins were great value picks. They even got a young quarterback to groom behind Eli Manning, 32.

1 (19) Justin Pugh, ot, Syracuse.

2 (49) Johnathan Hankins, dt, Ohio State.

3 (81) Damontre Moore, de, Texas A&M.

4 (110) Ryan Nassib, qb, Syracuse.

5 (152) Cooper Taylor, db, Richmond.

7 (225) Eric Herman, g, Ohio.

7 (253)-x Michael Cox, rb, UMass.

Philadelphia Eagles

CThe Eagles got better as a team, but they did not come out with an improved secondary. Unless it makes a trade or gets some veteran secondary players released after June 1, Philadelphia better be able to score, because teams are going to throw all over the Eagles. Barkley doesn’t seem to fit Chip Kelly’s offense, but he joins four other QBs the Eagles will take to training camp.

1 (4) Lane Johnson, ot, Oklahoma.

2 (35) Zach Ertz, te, Stanford.

3 (67) Bennie Logan, dt, LSU.

4 (98) Matt Barkley, qb, Southern Cal.

5 (136) Earl Wolff, db, N.C. State.

7 (212) Joe Kruger, de, Utah.

7 (218) Jordan Poyer, db, Oregon State.

7 (239)-x David King, de, Oklahoma.

Washington Redskins

C-The Redskins didn’t have a first-rounder, having surrendered it, along with their 2014 first-rounder, to the Rams for RG3. Their two biggest needs were safety, where Madieu Williams must be replaced, and cornerback, where DeAngelo Hall, E.J. Biggers and Josh Wilson are scheduled to become free agents in 2014. Mike Mayock called Amerson “a boom-or-bust candidate” with first-round talent.

2 (51) David Amerson, db, N.C. State.

3 (85) Jordan Reed, te, Florida.

4 (119) Phillip Thomas, db, Fresno State.

5 (154) Chris Thompson, rb, Florida State.

5 (162) Brandon Jenkins, lb, Florida State.

6 (191) Bacarri Rambo, db, Georgia.

7 (228) Jawan Jamison, rb, Rutgers.

NFC North

Chicago Bears

CIt certainly isn’t a sexy draft, but Long will start at OG and has a future at OT. Bostic, whose stock steadily rose during the evaluation period, will compete with free agent signee D.J. Williams for the job vacated by Brian Urlacher.

1 (20) Kyle Long, g, Oregon.

2 (50) Jon Bostic, lb, Florida.

4 (117) Khaseem Greene, lb, Rutgers.

5 (163) Jordan Mills, ot, Louisiana Tech.

6 (188) Cornelius Washington, de, Georgia.

7 (236) Marquess Wilson, wr, Washington State.

Detroit Lions

C+With nine picks, the Lions have plenty of players to try to upgrade their talent. Ansah and Taylor will join a DE corps depleted by the departures of Kyle Vanden Bosch and Cliff Avril. Willie Young, Jason Jones and Ronnell Lewis were the team’s only DEs before the draft began. Warford will be one of three new starters on the OL. Sanders could make a name for himself as a rookie, because of his return ability.

1 (5) Ziggy Ansah, de, BYU.

2 (36) Darius Slay, db, Mississippi State.

3 (65) Larry Warford, g, Kentucky.

4 (132)-x Devin Taylor, de, South Carolina.

5 (165) Sam Martin, p, Appalachian State.

6 (171) Corey Fuller, wr, Virginia Tech.

6 (199) Theo Riddick, rb, Notre Dame.

7 (211) Michael Williams, te, Alabama.

7 (245)-x Brandon Hepburn, lb, Florida A&M.

Green Bay Packers

B-The Packers know how to draft. They got 11 players this year, and Jones is a perfect fit in the 3-4. He is a future replacement for Ryan Pickett, who is 34 and in the final year of his contract. The rest of the league will regret letting the Packers draft Lacy in the second round. He and Franklin give Aaron Rodgers a much-needed running game.

1 (26) Datone Jones, de, UCLA.

2 (61) Eddie Lacy, rb, Alabama.

4 (109) David Bakhtiari, ot, Colorado.

4 (122) J.C. Tretter, ot, Cornell.

4 (125) Johnathan Franklin, rb, UCLA.

5 (159) Micah Hyde, db, Iowa.

5 (167)-x Josh Boyd, de, Mississippi State.

6 (193) Nate Palmer, lb, Illinois State.

7 (216) C.J. Johnson, wr, Grand Valley State.

7 (224) Kevin Dorsey, wr, Maryland.

7 (232) Sam Barrington, lb, South Florida.

Minnesota Vikings

A-The Vikings gave up a lot to get Cordarrelle Patterson, but it gave them three first-round picks and likely three new starters. Rhodes and Patterson fill two of the team’s biggest needs. Minnesota had been expected to draft Manti Te’o, but the Vikings came out of the draft likely still needing a MLB.

1 (23) Sharrif Floyd, dt, Florida.

1 (25) Xavier Rhodes, db, Florida State.

1 (29) Cordarrelle Patterson, wr, Tennessee.

4 (120) Gerald Hodges, lb, Penn State.

5 (155) Jeff Locke, p, UCLA.

6 (196) Jeff Baca, g, UCLA.

7 (213) Michael Mauti, lb, Penn State.

7 (214) Tarvis Bond, g, North Carolina.

7 (229) Everrett Dawkins, dt, Florida State.

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons

CTrufant and Alford are a huge addition after the Falcons released Dunta Robinson and had Brent Grimes leave for Miami. Both could start. Toiolo isn’t Zach Ertz, the higher-rated TE from Stanford, but he has a year to learn from the best in the business in Tony Gonzalez.

1 (22) Desmond Trufant, db, Washington.

2 (60) Robert Alford, db, SE Louisiana.

4 (127) Malliciah Goodwin, de, Clemson.

4 (133)-x Levine Toilolo, te, Stanford.

5 (153) Stansly Maponga, de, TCU.

7 (243)-x Kemel Ishmael, db, UCF.

7 (244)-x Zeke Motta, db, Notre Dame.

7 (249)-x Sean Renfree, qb, Duke.

Carolina Panthers

CThe Panthers went into the draft with RT, CB and S as their top needs. They filled none of them. They did, however, get two of the top DTs in the draft, and, paired with Dwan Edwards in a three-man rotation, the Panthers should get a great push inside.

1 (14) Star Lotulelei, dt, Utah.

2 (44) Kawann Short, dt, Purdue.

4 (108) Edmund Kugbila, g, Valdosta State.

5 (148) A.J. Klein, lb, Iowa State.

6 (182) Kenjon Barner, rb, Oregon.

New Orleans Saints

C-The Saints got the top safety in the draft, which was something of a surprise considering their need for outside linebackers. Junior Galette and Victor Butler are Rob Ryan’s starters at OLB currently. Armstead will compete with Jason Smith, a former No. 2 overall pick from Baylor who has bounced around the league, for the RT opening left by Jermon Bushrod.

1 (15) Kenny Vaccaro, db, Texas.

2 Forfeited.

3 (75) Terron Armstead, ot, Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

3 (82) John Jenkins, nt, Georgia.

5 (144) Kenny Stills, wr, Oklahoma.

6 (183) Rufus Johnson, lb, Tarleton State.

Tampa Bay Bucs

B-The Bucs have overhauled a secondary that gave up the most passing yards in the NFL last season. The trade for Darrelle Revis, which has to count for something in their draft grade, and the pick of Banks should help make Tampa Bay hard to throw against this season. Spence is penciled in to start as the replacement for Roy Miller at NT. They still need a pass-catching TE.

2 (43) Johnthan Banks, db, Mississippi State.

3 (73) Mike Glennon, qb, N.C. State.

4 (100) Akeem Spence, dt, Illinois.

4 (126) William Gholston, de, Michigan State.

5 (147) Steven Means, de, Buffalo.

6 (189) Mike James, rb, Miami.

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals

A-The Cardinals’ top priority, after allowing 58 sacks last season, was help in the offensive line. Cooper is a huge upgrade. There will be plenty of names to stick from this group of nine picks. Okafor, Taylor and Swope, for as productive as they were in college, could be steals. And if Mathieu can stay out of trouble, this draft class may be the one remembered for getting the Cardinals back in contention.

1 (7) Jonathan Cooper, g, North Carolina.

2 (45) Kevin Minter, lb, LSU.

3 (69) Tyrann Mathieu, db, LSU.

4 (103) Alex Okafor, lb, Texas.

4 (116) Earl Watford, g, James Madison.

5 (140) Stepfan Taylor, rb, Stanford.

6 (174) Ryan Swope, wr, Texas A&M.

6 (187) Andre Ellington, rb, Clemson.

7 (219) D.C. Jefferson, te, Rutgers.

St. Louis Rams

B-They got great value out of their first four picks. McDonald fills the biggest need as Quintin Mikell was released and Craig Dahl left in free agency. The Rams still have a huge concern at RB with Steven Jackson having departed for Atlanta. Stacy will compete with Daryl Richardson, Isaiah Pead and Terrance Ganaway, but the Rams waited too long to take one.

1 (8) Tavon Austin, wr, West Virginia.

1 (30) Alec Ogletree, lb, Georgia.

3 (71) T.J. McDonald, db, Southern Cal.

3 (92) Stedman Bailey, wr, West Virginia.

4 (113) Barrett Jones, c, Alabama.

5 (149) Brandon McGee, db, Miami.

5 (160) Zac Stacy, rb, Vanderbilt.

San Francisco 49ers

A+The rich just got richer. The 49ers, already loaded before the draft, added 11 new players. They could afford to draft Lattimore, who will take something of a redshirt season in getting his knee 100 percent. The 49ers’ first six picks could become stars, though Reid might be the only immediate starter from this outstanding class.

1 (18) Eric Reid, db, LSU.

2 (40) Cornellius Carradine, de, Florida State.

2 (55) Vance McDonald, te, Rice.

3 (88) Corey Lemonier, de, Auburn.

4 (128) Quinton Patton, wr, Louisiana Tech.

4 (131)-x Marcus Lattimore, rb, South Carolina.

5 (157) Quinton Dial, dt, Alabama.

6 (180) Nick Moody, lb, Florida State.

7 (237) B.J. Daniels, qb, South Florida.

7 (246)-x Carter Bykowski, ot, Iowa State.

7 (252)-x Marcus Cooper, db, Rutgers.

Seattle Seahawks

CThe Seahawks gave up their first-round pick for Percy Harvin, who should count in their draft grade. Williams’ medical concerns pushed him down the draft board, but if he can stay healthy, he was a steal. Hill will replace Alan Branch, who left for Buffalo, and upgrades the DT position.

2 (62) Christine Michael, rb, Texas A&M.

3 (87) Jordan Hill, dt, Penn State.

4 (123) Chris Harper, wr, Kansas State.

5 (137) Jesse Williams, dt, Alabama.

5 (138) Tharold Simon, db, LSU.

5 (158) Luke Willson, te, Rice.

6 (194) Spencer Ware, rb, LSU.

7 (220) Ryan Seymour, g, Vanderbilt.

7 (231) Ty Powell, lb, Harding.

7 (241)-x Jared Smith, g, New Hampshire.

7 (242)-x Michael Bowie, ot, Northeastern State (Okla.)

AFC East

Buffalo Bills

C-The Bills passed on drafting Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick and Andy Dalton, among others, in recent years. They didn’t pick the best year to use a first-round pick on a QB as Manuel was the only one selected. He is raw. Kevin Kolb is expected to start, and he surely appreciates the additions of Woods and Goodwin to go with Stevie Johnson. The Bills could have used their first choice on OG Chance Warmack instead of trading down. They lost LG Andy Levitre and key reserve Chad Rinehart in free agency and now have a huge hole.

1 (16) EJ Manuel, qb, Florida State.

2 (41) Robert Woods, wr, Southern Cal.

2 (46) Kiko Alonso, lb, Oregon.

3 (78) Marquise Goodwin, wr, Texas.

4 (105) Duke Williams, db, Nevada.

5 (143) Jonathan Meeks, db, Clemson.

6 (177) Dustin Hopkins, k, Florida State.

7 (222) Chris Gragg, te, Arkansas.

Miami Dolphins

B-The Dolphins got nine draftees, and six of the top 106 picks. They traded up to get Jordan, the draft’s top defensive player. Thomas might be more suited for OG in the NFL, so they still might need to trade for Chiefs OT Branden Albert. Sims might be the best blocking TE in the draft, which is what the Dolphins were looking for with the departure of Anthony Fasano. Taylor and Davis could be future replacements for Brent Grimes and Richard Marshall.

1 (3) Dion Jordan, de, Oregon.

2 (54) Jamar Taylor, db, Boise State.

3 (77) Dallas Thomas, ot, Tennessee.

3 (93) Will Davis, db, Utah State.

4 (104) Jelani Jenkins, lb, Florida.

4 (106) Dion Sims, te, Michigan State.

5 (164) Mike Gillislee, rb, Florida.

5 (166)-x Caleb Sturgis, k, Florida.

7 (250)-x Don Jones, db, Arkansas State.

New England Patriots

CBill Belichick made a draft-day trade to move down for the 16th time. The Patriots entered with five picks, had eight after the first-round trade with the Vikings and ended up with seven players. Dobson and Boyce will have chances to help with the departures of Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd. Collins provides depth behind Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich. The OL could have used some depth.

2 (52) Jamie Collins, lb, Southern Miss.

2 (59) Aaron Dobson, wr, Marshall.

3 (83) Logan Ryan, db, Rutgers.

3 (91) Duron Harmon, db, Rutgers.

4 (102) Josh Boyce, wr, TCU.

7 (226) Michael Buchanan, de, Illinois.

7 (235) Steve Beauharnais, lb, Rutgers.

New York Jets

C+Milliner will replace Darrelle Revis. Richardson was not a popular pick with Jets fans as it marks the third consecutive year the Jets have used a first-rounder on a DL following Muhammad Wilkerson in 2011 and Quinton Coples in 2012. But the talk of their draft is the selection of Smith, who will compete with Mark Sanchez for the starting job.

1 (9) Dee Milliner, db, Alabama.

1 (13) Sheldon Richardson, dt, Missouri.

2 (39) Geno Smith, qb, West Virginia.

3 (72) Brian Winters, ot, Kent State.

5 (141) Oday Aboushi, ot, Virginia.

6 (178) William Campbell, g, Michigan.

7 (215) Tommy Bohanon, rb, Wake Forest.

AFC North

Baltimore Ravens

C+The Super Bowl champs were able to reload with 10 picks. Elam and Brown are the future with safety Ed Reed having departed for Houston and inside linebacker Ray Lewis having retired. Elam joins free-agent signee Michael Huff. Lewis-Moore tore his ACL in the national championship game or he might have gone higher.

1 (32) Matt Elam, db, Florida.

2 (56) Arthur Brown, lb, Kansas State.

3 (94) Brandon Williams, dt, Missouri Southern.

4 (129) John Simon, lb, Ohio State.

4 (130)-x Kyle Juszczyk, rb, Harvard.

5 (168)-x Ricky Wagner, g, Wisconsin.

6 (200) Kapron Lewis-Moore, de, Notre Dame.

6 (203)-x Ryan Jensen, c, Colorado State-Pueblo.

7 (238) Aaron Mellette, wr, Elon.

7 (247)-x Marc Anthony, db, California.

Cincinnati Bengals

CThe Bengals got 10 players, though Porter was the highest selected LB. They still have a need for OLBs. Eifert gives Andy Dalton another weapon, though Cincinnati did draft TE Jermaine Gresham with the 21st overall choice in 2010. Hunt and Burkhead were good value.

1 (21) Tyler Eifert, te, Notre Dame.

2 (37) Gio Bernard, rb, North Carolina.

2 (53) Margus Hunt, de, SMU.

3 (84) Shawn Williams, db, Georgia.

4 (118) Sean Porter, lb, Texas A&M.

5 (156) Tanner Hawkinson, g, Kansas.

6 (190) Rex Burkhead, rb, Nebraska.

6 (197) Cobi Hamilton, wr, Arkansas.

7 (240)-x Reid Fragel, ot, Ohio State.

7 (251)-x T.J. Johnson, c, South Carolina.

Cleveland Browns

C-For a team that needs help in the worst way, the Browns had only five picks, and only two were in the first five rounds. It’s hard to get better that way. CB was the biggest need, but they passed on the top corners to take Mingo. McFadden, the third-round choice, likely will replace Sheldon Brown as the starter opposite Joe Haden.

1 (6) Barkevious Mingo, de, LSU.

2 Exercised in supplemental draft.

3 (68) Leon McFadden, db, San Diego State.

6 (175) Jamoris Slaughter, db, Notre Dame.

7 (217) Armonty Bryant, de, East Central.

7 (227) Garrett Gilkey, ot, Charon State.

Pittsburgh Steelers

C+The Steelers’ draft needs, in order, were LB, RB, WR and S. They drafted them in that order. Pittsburgh knows how to draft LBs, which is why it didn’t meet James Harrison’s salary demand, and Jarvis Jones will challenge Jason Worilds for the starting job. It is a good situation for Landry Jones, who can learn behind Ben Roethlisberger.

1 (17) Jarvis Jones, lb, Georgia.

2 (48) Le’Veon Bell, rb, Michigna State.

3 (79) Markus Wheaton, wr, Oregon State.

4 (111) Shamarko Thomas, db, Syracuse.

4 (115) Landry Jones, qb, Oklahoma.

5 (150) Terry Hawthorne, db, Illinois.

6 (186) Justin Brown, wr, Oklahoma.

6 (206)-x Vince Williams, lb, Florida State.

7 (223) Nick Williams, db, Samford.

AFC South

Houston Texans

CThe Texans had to help an offense that has seen first-round additions to that side of the ball only twice since 2003. Hopkins will be a good complement to Andre Johnson, 30. Williams will compete with Ryan Harris for the starting RT job. Montgomery’s passion for football has been questioned, but if Wade Phillips can get him to play, Montgomery was a steal.

1 (27) DeAndre Hopkins, wr, Clemson.

2 (57) D.J. Swearinger, db, South Carolina.

3 (89) Brennan Williams, ot, North Carolina.

3 (95)-x Sam Montgomery, de, LSU.

4 (124) Trevardo Williams, lb, UConn.

6 (176) David Quessenberry, ot, San Jose State.

6 (195) Alan Bonner, wr, Jacksonville State.

6 (198) Chris Jones, db, Bowling Green.

6 (201)-x Ryan Griffin, te, UConn.

Indianapolis Colts

CWerner compares to Paul Kruger, who Chuck Pagano had when he was coordinator of the Ravens defense. Hughes, who is raw, is a project. But the Colts have had good luck drafting small-school players. Thornton will be groomed as one of the future pieces of the OL. The Colts could have used a WR.

1 (24) Bjoern Werner, de, Florida State.

3 (86) Hugh Thornton, g, Illinois.

4 (121) Khaled Holmes, c, Southern Cal.

5 (139) Montori Hughes, dt, UT-Martin.

6 (192) John Boyett, db, Oregon.

7 (230) Kerwynn Williams, rb, Utah State.

7 (254)-x Justice Cunningham, te, South Carolina.

Jacksonville Jaguars

A-GM David Caldwell and Gus Bradley get high marks for their first draft. They needed secondary help and picked five of them, including Cyprien. They needed offensive line help, and they got the No. 1-rated player on their draft board in Joeckel with the second choice. Defensive end still is a concern after the Jaguars had only 20 sacks last season. But Robinson could be the steal of the draft.

1 (2) Luke Joeckel, ot, Texas A&M.

2 (33) Johnathan Cyprien, db, FIU.

3 (64) Dwayne Gratz, db, UConn.

4 (101) Ace Sanders, wr, South Carolina.

5 (135) Denard Robinson, rb, Michigan.

6 (169) Josh Evans, db, Florida.

7 (208) Jeremy Harris, db, New Mexico State.

7 (210) Demetrius McCray, db, Appalachian State.

Tennessee Titans

CCoach Mike Munchak, a Hall of Fame guard, coveted Warmack. The Titans, having Andy Levitre in free agency, now might have the best set of guards in the league. They sorely need a pass rusher after failing to land a DE until the fifth round. Hunter will make an impact.

1 (10) Chance Warmack, g, Alabama.

2 (34) Justin Hunter, wr, Tennessee.

3 (70) Blidi Wreh-Wilson, db, UConn.

3 (97)-x Zaviar Gooden, lb, Missouri.

4 (107) Brian Schwenke, c, California.

5 (142) Lavar Edwards, de, LSU.

6 (202)-x Khalid Wooten, db, Nevada.

7 (248)-x Daimion Stafford, db, Nebraska.

AFC West

Denver Broncos

C-Williams and Ball will compete for starting jobs, but they could be the only impact players out of this class. The Broncos didn’t draft for their two biggest needs, MLB and S. Nate Irving, Steven Johnson and Stewart Bradley are the only candidates at MLB, and Broncos fans won’t like their team not getting an upgrade on S Rahim Moore, who gave up the game-winning pass vs. the Ravens.

1 (28) Sylvester Williams, dt, North Carolina.

2 (58) Montee Ball, rb, Wisconsin.

3 (90) Kayvon Webster, db, South Florida.

5 (146) Quanteras Smith, de, Western Kentucky.

5 (161) Tavarres King, wr, Georgia.

6 (173) Vinston Painter, ot, Virginia Tech.

7 (234) Zac Dysert, qb, Miami (Ohio).

Kansas City Chiefs

CThe Chiefs had to have a tackle after releasing Eric Winston. If they can keep Branden Albert, at least for 2013, they’ll be set at the position. Their other two needs were safety and inside linebacker, and they had less success filling those. They didn’t get a safety, and ILB Johnson wasn’t picked until the fourth round. Davis might have been a reach, especially considering the RBs already on their roster.

1 (1) Eric Fisher, ot, Central Michigan.

3 (63) Travis Kelce, te, Cincinnati.

3 (96)-x Knile Davis, rb, Arkansas.

4 (99) Nico Johnson, lb, Alabama.

5 (134) Sanders Commings, db, Georgia.

6 (170) Eric Kush, c, California (Pa.)

6 (204)-x Braden Wilson, rb, Kansas State.

7 (207) Mike Catapano, lb, Princeton.

Oakland Raiders

C-The Raiders had been expected to draft a DT with the No. 3 pick, with Richard Seymour, Tommy Kelly and Desmond Bryant all having departed. But they didn’t take one until the sixth round. They traded down with the Dolphins to take Hayden, whose draft stock skyrocketed after he was medically cleared. Wilson will groom under Matt Flynn.

1 (12) D.J. Hayden, db, Houston.

2 (42) Menelik Watson, ot, Florida State.

3 (66) Sio Moore, lb, UConn.

4 (112) Tyler Wilson, qb, Arkansas.

6 (172) Nick Kasa, te, Colorado.

5 (181) Latavius Murray, rb, UCF.

6 (184) Mychal Rivera, te, Tennessee.

6 (205)-x Stacy McGee, dt, Oklahoma.

7 (209) Brice Butler, wr, San Diego State.

7 (233) David Bass, dt, Missouri Western.

San Diego Chargers

C-The Chargers had only six picks, but the top four could be starters. That could be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending on how good the talent is they drafted. One thing is for sure: Their draft grade would have been an F if they hadn’t come out of it with a OT starter. Fluker is that. Te’o was an interesting pick who could have an impact long-term.

1 (11) D.J. Fluker, ot, Alabama.

2 (38) Mantei Te’o, lb, Notre Dame.

3 (76) Keenan Allen, wr, California.

5 (145) Steve Williams, db, California.

6 (179) Tourek Williams, lb, FIU.

7 (221) Brad Sorenson, qb, Utah State.

LOSERS

Dallas Cowboys – There are times when you look at what a team does in the draft and say, “What the heck was that?” The Cowboys did just that when they first traded out of a spot to get pretty good defensive help (safety Eric Reid went with the pick the Cowboys gave up) and then passed on Matt Elam. In the process, the Cowboys took a guy (center Travis Frederick) who many teams didn't project to go until Saturday. While the next pick (tight end Gavin Escobar) was solid, the Cowboys then took wide receiver Terrance Williams and safety J.J. Wilcox, a pair of guys who are complete projects. Williams is not particularly fast and produced stats largely because he played in Baylor's pinball offense. As for Wilcox, he's a small-school product (Georgia Southern) with one year of experience. In the third round? Yikes.

Media picking on us again.

They've been picking on us for 17 years, which is the main reason we've only won 1 playoff game. They're in our head. Evil media. Nothing to do with one constant GM. Bad luck too.

One day, we'll run out of excuses.

How is Terrence Williams a project? He's as raw as most receivers entering the pros are.

LOL No. Did not mean it for you. Was the whole Zoner/homer mentality which I try my damnedest not to associate you with.

It's cool I know where I stand after today.

Not going to ruin my enjoyment of the team though.

It's cool I know where I stand after today

Stop it. You're a Cowboys fan, I'm a Cowboys fan. You're an optimist, I'm a pessimist. Remember, the whole time I was saying I like the players we added. My issue is that we continued to ignore the trenches and we reached, as usual. Overall, I think all 7 players plus UDFA Magee make the team. I'm sick of the mediocrity and the reason (Jerry) behind it. That comes out as complaining in your book, which is fine. I'm passionate about the team in my way. You look on the brighter side. It's all cool.

Bob still sucks though.

2013 NFL Draft: Dallas Cowboys Still Have Glaring Needs After 7 Rounds
3 hours ago by Jeric Griffin

The Dallas Cowboys selected seven players in three days of the 2013 NFL Draft, but don’t really have anything to show for it. Sure, Travis Frederick is a center, which is a position of need for Dallas, but this team absolutely had to draft at least three offensive linemen but ended up with only one that was way over drafted. Is anyone surprised?
Of course, clueless Cowboys general manager Jerry Jones tried to cover up his latest boneheaded move by saying Frederick will start from day one. Really and truly, Dallas has no choice but to start Frederick since the team had no salary cap space to use in free agency and Phil Costa is awful. Ryan Cook is certainly better than Costa, but he’s in the final year of his contract and he probably won’t be back now that the Cowboys wasted a first-round pick on Frederick.
Just in case you’re wondering, the Cowboys also took tight end Gavin Escobar, receiver Terrance Williams, safety JJ Wilcox, cornerback BW Webb, running back Joseph Randle and outside linebacker DeVonte Holloman in the draft. Williams is the only one with any sense of star power although Wilcox has a chance to start right away. The Cowboys needed a free safety after releasing Gerald Sensabaugh, so that’s a position of need, but the “needs” at tight end, cornerback, running back and outside linebacker were way overblown, especially considering the glaring needs on the offensive and defensive line, the latter of which wasn’t addressed at all.
The only way the Cowboys get out of this draft without looking like complete buffoons is if Frederick and Wilcox become quality starters right away and Williams turns out to be a solid No. 3 option at receiver like Laurent Robinson was two years ago.
According to ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys actually brought Tony Romo into Valley Ranch on Friday before day two for advice and he liked what he saw in both Escobar and Williams, prompting Dallas to take both players. Clearly Romo has taken too many hard shots since he didn’t push for his team to draft more offensive linemen and that should only get worse considering Frederick is the only new face on that unit.
So basically, this entire draft could be a complete waste for the Cowboys. Escobar and Williams could be starters down the road, so that’s a plus, but this is a team looking to win now and not filling the glaring needs means more mediocrity in 2013.

Dallas Cowboys

Top needs: G/C, S, DT, RB, RT, DE

Summary: I'm pretty sure I described the Dallas draft as "a little all over the place" when I was asked about it midway through. But looking at all the picks together, I'll tell you it certainly improved in my eyes as we got into the later rounds. I was a little critical of the first-round pick, just because the Cowboys drafted a player I thought they could have taken at least 30 spots later. Travis Frederick was my 87th-ranked player. And yet they should get credit because he'll be a starter at a position where they were a total mess in 2013. Gavin Escobar is a good tight end and a great catcher of the football, and he can learn from Jason Witten, but Witten can still play. Similar story with Terrence Williams, an extremely productive wideout for Baylor, who offers depth with the potential to start. Now, those are players I like, but taking two pass-catchers without addressing safety or an aging defensive line seemed really odd to me. Then it got better. J.J. Wilcox has the potential to become a starter and was my No. 5-ranked safety. B.W. Webb is also a prospect at corner out of William & Mary. My concern with both of those picks is the jump in competition, so they'll need seasoning. Randle is a get at a need position late. The Cowboys made some good picks, but no help on the defensive line or depth at tackle out of this draft is disappointing.

Round Pick Position Player College
(1) 31 C Travis Frederick Wisconsin
(2) 47 TE Gavin Escobar San Diego St.
(3) 74 WR Terrance Williams Baylor
(3) 80 S J.J. Wilcox Georgia Southern
(4) 114 CB B.W. Webb William & Mary
(5) 151 RB Joseph Randle Oklahoma State
(6) 185 LB DeVonte Holloman South Carolina

Looking over everyone's windfall from the weekend here's some thoughts on a few:

1) NFC East- I know some people are gaga over the Giants draft simply because they drafted an OL and two DL with their first 3 picks, but the guys they drafted in the 2nd and 3rd round have a very high possibility of being busts. Other than being thuggies or druggies, they have about the worst traits a prospect can have (lazy, poor work ethic, takes plays off, and Moore had one of the alltime awful workouts etc etc) I thought our draft was average, but I thought Philly did pretty well and think they "won" a draft contest in or division. Wasn't impressed with Washington's draft, although if Rambo stays clean I do think they found a really good FS late. I thought the same thing Bob did yesterday about Phillip Thomas. After seeing his clips, he REALLY looks slow and I am glad we didn't take him now.

2) NFC North- I thought the Vikes probably got the most immediate impact (obviously, they had 3 firsts). But Patterson really has to be good to warrant the 4 for 1 swap to get him. Our 2013 draft will be linked to them forever based on how good/bad Frederick and Floyd end up. Liked the Lions draft. Packers I'm sure will get a lot of help from Jones and the two RB's they picked. Thought the Bears flunked and for those complaining that Frederick was a reach, at least Frederick has alot of experience starting at a big time program, Long has very little starting experience and some other red flag issues.

3) NFC South- I think Atlanta picked two pretty good CB prospects and I liked the Panthers selections of the two DT's they got back to back. But I thought the Saints and Bucs draft were pretty mediocre and overall I don't think this division did all that well as a whole.

4) NFC West- The Niners had a shit ton of picks and I do like Reid and Carradine. I also like Q Dial for the 3-4 DE spot. But overall I honestly don't think they did that great. Kinda knew they'd be the team to take Lattimore as well. Same thing goes for Seattle, a lot of quantity but not sure its really quality. I think the Rams did ok but they paid a pretty big premium to get a smurf WR. I really liked Arizona draft except for the throwaway stupid pick on honey-loser. I think they did better than the other 3 in this division.

5) AFC East- I think the Jets drafted another QB bust in Geno Smith, but their other tops picks I like a lot and think they easily had the best draft in this division. The other 3 teams I think had mediocre to poor drafts, and I firmly believe both the Fins and Bills top picks will be huge busts. By the way, that new Fins logo is horrible.

6) AFC North- Browns probably big losers in this division. I thought the Bengals had the best draft in this division again though and they continue to really stockpile good young players. Eifert with Gresham and AJ Green is really tough. If Jarvis Jones plays in the NFL like he did at Georgia, he could be the Stealers best pass rusher ever. Liked their next 3 picks as well, and all three could start or play extensively as rookies. Thought the Ravens draft was ok too, though not as good as Cinci or Pitt's IMO

7) AFC South- Thought the Titans did better than the other 3 teams in this division, although I liked the Texans draft too and pairing Hopkins with Johnson will help them a lot. Also think Swearinger will be pretty good early. Colts and Jags had average drafts IMO, neither did particularly good or bad.

8) AFC West- Didn't think any of these teams had particularly good drafts, although I love Eric Fisher and think he's gonna be a 10 yr solid starter and probably a probowler. Also like Fluker in San Diego, but I think Teo is going to be a huge bust and trading up for him was dumb IMO. I think Denver may have gotten a steal with Ball and that pass rusher they drafted from Western Kentucky could really be interesting down the road when paired with V Miller.

That's what Goose recommended for the first three picks, as Goose is seldom wrong. :tiptoe

I still think we will sign a RT in the next week or so. In the 2nd round there wasn't really a guard to take. In the 3rd we could have taken Armstead but I think the FO likes Parrnel and have plans to grab Clabo. Rounds 4-7 are about acquiring players and does anyone really have expectations for any OL that we would have taken?

It's cool I know where I stand after today.

Not going to ruin my enjoyment of the team though.

Theebs, I'm the second dumbest person on DCU next to Bob and even I knew who/what cmd was referring to. You're a great fan and I'm glad you post here, but you're wayyyy too sensitive. You need a hug......
