Horn: Michael Irvin trusts Troy Aikman in the pocket, Tony Romo outside it

Not at all. He's just saying that Romo does certain things better, just as Quincy did certain things better than White or Meredith. If I observed that Steve Young had a better arm than Joe Montana, that's hardly calling him a better overall QB.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

The problem is that you overrate the talent Troy had to work with (esp early and late in his career) while underrating Tony's supporting cast. Free agency and the salary cap really hamstrung the offense in the mid-1990s, resulting in the loss of stalwarts like Stepnoski and Gogan. Big E's knee...

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

Aikman couldn't move around in 1991? Nonsense. He wasn't nearly a Bledsoe-like statue at that stage, yet he was sacked 32 times that year (a year that ended early for him before Thanksgiving). I've already conceded that Romo's mobility/agility were superior to Troy's, but so was Quincy's. Big deal.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

Don't you mean "Romo haters"? That's usually the low-blow Tony's admirers resort to when they're losing an argument. BTW, has Tony ever been sacked 11 times in one game, as Troy was in 1991--a year when Emmitt won the rushing title behind that so-called "great" offensive line?

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

To whom are you referring? Gurode and Colombo are still active. Kosier just got released, but I'm sure someone will pick him up. Flo played last year and is a FA.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

Switzer was just a figurehead. A novice to the pro game, he wisely let the assistant coaches run the show. Galloway didn't dub him "Insignificant Sideline Personnel" for nothing. I don't care for Garrett at all, but he's a lot closer to a real head coach than Switzer ever was.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

But if Staubach and Aikman were in their prime in 2012, and also had the advantage of the same off-season programs and conditioning, why couldn't they be better than Romo?

On the contrary. Who better to compare the two quarterbacks than fans old enough to remember Aikman's career from start to finish?

If true, wouldn't that mean that guys like Warren Moon and Jim Kelly are also superior to Aikman? Then Zoners won't be happy. According to them, Tony is a "leader" no matter what.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

Is Tony Romo as good as Danny White? March, 21, 2012 By Calvin Watkins It was nice of Troy Aikman to say Tony Romo is better than he was. I think Aikman was being nice. Romo isn't as good as Aikman, a Hall of Fame quarterback with three Super Bowl rings. To me, it's not about Romo being as...

He erred by saying better QB. Had he said better athlete (scrambling, golf, etc.), that would have been closer to the truth.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

It's called "professional courtesy." I'm sure that if you combed through the archives, you could find him saying nice things about Quincy and Henson too. Lord knows Staubach did. As for Robinson, him getting open had more than a little to do with those TDs as well. It's not like Tony was...

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

The team isn't stacked, but yes, Tony does have a lot of skilled players to work with (Dez, Miles, Felix, Murray, Witten, etc.) And before anyone starts whining about the O-line, remember that Troy had to work with guys like Hegamin, Page, Shiver and McIver late in his career.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys' Tony Romo 'already a better quarterback than I was'

Tony has been blessed with weapons every since he took over the job. Troy started with junk and pretty much ended his career with junk. Nor did it help that he (prematurely) lost Irvin to a neck injury, Galloway to a knee injury, and was saddled with an over-the-hill Anthony Miller. If Tony had...
