Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

That's tantamount to an admission of defeat. It's like saying to the fans, "You know what? We don't have the competence or know-how to unearth quality replacements in the draft, so we have no choice but to overpay Carr, overpay Spencer for one year, and throw away a second rounder for...

    2012 NFL Draft Chatter...

I was referring to Tony's groupies, who think he's merely a victim of his surroundings.

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

It was news to me. The second we drafted Claiborne, I said to myself "Where is he gonna play?" We all knew Newman was on the way out; not so Jenkins. The notion that he would be prohibitively expensive to keep never crossed my mind. What year are you referring to? We weren't facing a big hole...

Mike Lombardi on KTCK- recap by IR

If Broaddus said the same thing, people would be screaming that he's a failed scout. Well, Lombardi is an ex-NFL guy too.

    2012 NFL Draft Chatter...

For some fans, you can never love Tony enough, but God help you if you love him too little.

    Day One Grade

A little birdy told me he loves our 3rd round pick too (TBD).

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

Newman, Scandrick and our atrocious safeties cost us games in 2011, not Jenkins, who had a fine bounceback year. Right area of concern; wrong target.

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

Richardson no doubt had a higher grade than Murray or Felix. What the hell, let's draft him too. We can throw 8.8 million at Spencer but not find a creative way to keep Jenkins? Nor is it a fait accompli that he'd be paid more than Carr. And Jenkins was a cheap alternative compared to...

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

Fine. Claiborne's a Cowboy now and I hope he does well. If not, I won't come back here screaming "I told you so!" Well, maybe just a little. I just think our resources could have been better allocated.

Ten bucks says he pushed instead of pulled that door handle.

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

I'd have to see how he performs this year, but the Cowboys seem to have already have made up their minds. Paying two corners top $ isn't any more insane than paying two o-linemen handsomely. You think LT was the only Giants linebacker making good money in their heyday?

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

But he doesn't have to be "gone." By trading him or letting him go after 2012, they create an unnecessary need. We had bigger fish to fry than cornerback. So now we have the same old safeties, an erratic slot defender like Scandrick, and a draft pick who may or may not be better than Jenkins.

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

Starters Webster and Thomas were second rounders. Prince and Phillips were first rounders. If they sacrificed a second round pick for any of these guys, that's news to me.

Then find a Corey Webster type that won't cost you an arm and a leg and instead address bigger needs.

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

Forget the squandered second rounder. It wouldn't have made sense even if we had the sixth pick all along. The G-men didn't need a "lockdown" corner to win another SB and neither do we. There were higher priorities.

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

Nor sure how much of that was on Jenkins' tab. In terms of culprits, he'd be last on the list. Newman Scandrick Elam Sensabaugh Jenkins

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

I don't see it. He's a prospect, not a proven commodity. For most teams with their act together, Carr + Jenkins would be more than sufficient to win a title. Now we have Carr + Claiborne but the same old problems in other areas of the team. In that sense, drafting Claiborne is like putting brand...

Sturm: Cowboys snag Claiborn, but at what cost?

Close. We lost a high pick and possibly Jenkins to boot, so unless Claiborne is twice the player Jenkins is (doubtful), you're merely running in quicksand.
