He's too slow for this scheme. He could maybe play the Elephant Position like Clay Matthews played for Carroll at USC but that's not an everydown position. LB's, even the SOLB, must be quick. He will get killed in the flats.
this is the attitude that kills us every year.
We'll be fine with Alan Ball. We'll be fine with Kevin Ogletree. We'll be fine with Phil Costa.
Competition. Don't just hand jobs to unproven scrubby players.
I wonder if OLB Jonathan Casillas, a Saints free agent, could be had on the cheap. Like Ernie Sims cheap. I really don't want to go into next season with Alex Albright as option A at SOLB.
Parcells always said you want to run the defense that fewer teams use, so there are more scheme specific players available to you. Good to see the majority of teams going to a 3-4.
Coaches will tell you, talent makes the coach.
Hatcher, Spears, Lissemore, Drunky 1, Drunky 2, Crawford, and the host of scrubs we signed off the street don't come close to that talent.
The good news is we may have a d-line that looks like this next year:
LDE Tyrone Crawford
LDT Henry Melton...
Can't believe I'm saying this, but Scandrick might be an ideal Tampa 2 style Cornerback.
and again, it's not as big a need in this scheme so we could find lesser free agent cornerbacks to play it. Plus, if we don't have Claiborne that means we have, let's say Michael Brockers and Bobby Wagner...
Julius Peppers perennial Pro Bowler
Henry Melton, 4th round pick and Pro Bowler
Stephen Paea, 2nd round pick
Corey Wooten, 4th round pick
Shea McClellin, 1st round pick
It must be nice it hit on 4th round picks.
I don't think it's waste by any means. I like Claiborne and can't wait to see once his play catches up with his athleticism and confidence and he's making plays like he did in Baton Rouge.
My point is that Jerry justified the big trade up by saying he's a shutdown corner (always good to have)...
David, the Tampa 2 is all about staying in your zones and handing off players once they exit your zone. The need for a "shutdown" corner does not really exist in a Tampa 2. If disciplined and if quarterbacks get impatient, Claiborne has the opportunity to make plays. A bigger concern is what's...
