Is Downs overrated? Sadly, yes. He's definitely smallish for the position, and he had a paltry number of INTs and forced fumbles at Bama and OSU. When we drafted him, the first thing Saban said was that he was a great
person, not a great
player. Very revealing. Then there's the inconvenient fact that the so-called "best defensive player in the draft" fell all the way to 11. The Jones boys done been hoodwinked again.
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the tremendous consensus is this guy is a spectacular football player on the field.
I don't know how one can argue he wasn't a great player with all the hardware he has either. He's a two time unanimous All American, he was the 2025 Thorpe award winner, the was the 2023 Freshmen of the year. The guy was used all over the defense for 3 different defensive coordinators.
As for Saban's comments, you cherry picked one quote and tried to turn it into a negative. Here's a sampling of what Saban said, in more detail:
Key Quotes from Saban (During 2026 NFL Draft Coverage on ESPN)
- “This is as fine a young man as you’re ever going to find to be a part of your team. He’s a great competitor. He’s got great character. He’s so instinctive as a player. He can play downhill, he can play in the box, he can play the deep field, he can play man to man. This guy is a tremendous, tremendous person and competitor.”

- “And I tell you what, there’s only a few guys that I love more than this guy as a player on our football team. And he did a great job and improved even more at Ohio State.”

Other Notable Comments from Saban
- On playmaking impact (on The Pat McAfee Show before the draft): “Caleb Downs made more plays in college than anybody in the draft. If he makes that many plays in the NFL… I mean what is the capability gap? How much better can he get?” He added that Downs is “so instinctive… got really good ability… a phenomenal person and he is a football junkie.”

- As a freshman at Alabama: “When he played for us as a freshman, he would have been the first safety taken in the draft.”

- On instincts and competitiveness: Saban has called Downs one of the most instinctive players he’s ever coached, with “top-tier all-time” competitive IQ and the ability to react fast (e.g., coming downhill from deep).

- Overall character: “This guy is one of the most complete people I’ve ever had the opportunity to coach. He’s a great person. He’s a great student…” (from earlier College GameDay comments).

Saban’s praise highlights Downs as a high-character, instinctive, versatile safety who was already elite as a true freshman and continued developing. Downs has been described by those around Saban as someone who spent extra time around him (sometimes called “Little Nick” for his mindset). Overall, Saban’s comments are among the strongest endorsements you’ll hear from him about a former player.
