Preseason over finally. Not a lot of positives overall from it and despite winning last night and some people hoohawing over "they look good!" I wasn't overly impressed.
The Falcons (like us) played mostly nobodies. The 2nd half run defense was a complete joke (again). We really didn't run the ball all that great ourselves. Penalties galore (again) and many of them of just the stupid fucking variety that are normally tell-tale signs of a poorly coached team. (players unable to line up correctly on offense, 12 men on field on defense negating an int etc etc). It was just a ho-hum game to me and we learned next to nothing.
1) Joe Milton had his "best" game but that wasn't saying much, and he still barely completed 50%+ of his throws. He was also lucky he didn't fumble on one of his scrambles because he was carrying the thing so far away from his body in one hand. Showed some excellent athletic ability on a few runs and did have two or three nice throws. But I didnt come away thinking he was the answer at #2 QB
2) Jaydon Blue debut had everyone buzzing and he did have a couple of nice runs, but the run blocking for him was poor and he had several plays he was stuffed behind the line. He also showed on a couple runs he was dancing around more instead of just hitting the hole. Then he got hurt (again) but said it the lockerroom afterward it was just a mild ankle sprain. Overall it was 9 carries for 25 yds and 13 of those yards came on one carry.
3) Brandon Aubrey is the best kicker in the league and it isn't even close anymore. He hit from 64 last night and it might have been good from close to 74. And he made it look completely effortless. All 4 PAT's were nailed right down the middle as well.
4) I thought James Houston and Shemar James were the two best defensive players for us last night. Perrion Winfrey was also decent. Nobody else impressed me on defense. Mazi had 3 tackles and one was a huge TFL on 3rd down, but he was also completely unblocked. I think he's done here. Almost every Falcons pass play receivers were pretty open due to exceedingly soft coverage and as noted above the 2nd half run defense was dreadful. I think the Falcons had 110-120 yds rushing the 2nd half alone.
5) Offensively as noted above Milton was better than the other two games but that bar was as low as possible. Deuce Vaughn started and for some reason got more carries than the other backs. I thought Phil Mafah had the best running play of the night shedding tacklers and trucking a Falcon defender at the 2nd level for a 15yd run. Blue was ok but I didnt see anything to make me think he was the "answer" at RB yet. Flournoy had another good game and Jalen Brooks had a nice 30 yd TD grab. OL didnt do a consistent job of opening holes (again)
6) Schottenheimer has preached all offseason and training camp about being more physical on both sides of the ball, but through the preseason I have seen no evidence of this being the case. The team still appears very soft to me overall.
7) I posted the pic in the Trade Parsons thread, but that had to be one of the more embarrassing scenes I have ever seen on a sideline. Schottenheimer should have ripped his ass out but of course he didn't (nor did anyone else). The dude obviously doesn't want to be here, get rid of him and get all you can in draft capital (and maybe a potential legit starter at DT or something). I hate Jerry with a passion but it does seem like from all the news that came out the last few days that he might actually be telling the truth on what was offered to Parsons, and Parsons and his agent said no because the agent is butthurt over Jones talking to Parsons directly. The worst part of that is Jones says Parsons agreed to the workings of that deal and shook on it, only to reneg after talking to his run away ego agent. Agents work for players and players work for owners and this is not anything up for argument. He isn't worth the trouble anymore IMO, get him out of here. Bill Parcells had an agent similar to this guy that represents Parsons (I think it was the Postons) and he said he'd never draft or sign a player who worked with them (one of them was famously Shawn Merriman). The Cowboys now need to do that with this guy Mugaleta or whatever his name is.
7) I said after the first preseason game the team really needs to upgrade 3 positions, and nothing has changed. We are in big trouble against the run at DT, we are in big trouble at CB until Diggs, Revel and Carson can return and show they are 100% and we don't have a legit #2 QB. We never got to see Javonte Williams carry the ball in preseason games, but unless he is significantly better than Sanders or Blue we appear to have a problem at RB too. I like Mafah but I bet the Jones-tards think they can sneak him on the PS.
Will be interesting to see what kind of moves they make in the next few days. The first one should be to get rid of Parsons but they do need help at these other positions noted. Maybe I will be wrong (and hope I am) but this looks like a 7 or 8 win team to me at best right now and needless to say I am not overly optimistic in our teams chances for 2025.
