Ugly wins, it's one of the things we've been fairly decent at for 30 years. If they'd have come out and dominated the game and won easily (as they should have if they were going to make a real effort to win) then I could see the argument for "built momentum for 2026". But they looked like shit again and the worst part is the Redskins essentially fielded a scab football team yesterday. 3rd or 4th string QB playing on his 14th NFL team. At least 3 backup OL (starting C Biadasz went out early and never returned), backup RBs. Backup TE. Numerous defensive starters out including 3 of their top 4 DL. It was a classic Cowboys "win but look like total shit doing it" game. Ultimately the "win" only hurt our draft position and many of the younger guys (including QB Joe Milton) who need playing time got none.
1) The 60 million dollar man played more like a $60 dollar man. He was not good at all yesterday against a really bad defense. Missed wide open guys all over the place. Missed two gimmee TD's to Lamb that probably would have totaled close to 100 yards, missed another big play to Lamb that might have been another 30-40 yards. Made poor decisions left and right. Was too hesitant to run even when gigantic running lanes were there (including one 3rd down play where he easily could have gotten the 1st by running but threw the ball into the ground at a receiver's feet instead). Barely completed 50% of his passes on a perfect football weather day. Probably had a half dozen good plays at best and further compounded a poor throwing day by taking several knuckleheaded sacks. Horrendous display of QB play and further proof playing Milton extensively (if not the whole game) should have happened.
2) Another poor effort defensively, despite playing mostly a bunch of nobodies at QB and OL. No pressure on the QB at all and the pass coverage was non existent. Got cooked badly on several run plays outside, including one where the guy ran 70+ yds for a TD basically untouched. The tackling was horrible and there are numerous plays you can see Hooker and Diggs just literally STANDING around watching other guys try to tackle. Hooker also got trucked on several run plays including one TD in the redzone. Clowney, Q Williams (who played hurt) and rookie Shemar James were the only guys that had decent games. On one play Clowney comes from across the formation and sprints 30-40 yards downfield trying to catch Deebo Samuel on a long play. Clowney also was credited for 1 1/2 sacks and 3 TFL's.
3) Another game where team discipline hardly existed. 11 accepted penalties total and a number of them were just pure stupidity. Many pre-snap penalties again including one classic "keystone cops Cowboys" play where the two motion guys cris cross and run into each other, and both are moving at the time of the snap. There were numerous plays at the time of the snap (both sides of the ball) where guys didn't know where they were supposed to line up. This was the 5th game this season with double digit accepted penalties (a 6th had 9). The Cowboys now lead the league in penalties and are 2nd in penalty yards.
4) Am still fairly excited about our top-3 draft picks for the future. Booker is a legit probowler and all-pro in the making. Ezeiruaku has had a solid rookie season (although I thought yesterday was maybe his worst game since early in the yr, he has definitely hit a rookie wall a little the past few games) and Shavon Revel has a bright future. I see some grumbling online about him but he's still barely a yr out from ACL repair and he has done SOME good things on a week to week basis that gives you hope. With a full offseason and training camp plus some strength training (his tackling has been inconsistent) he should be pretty good for us. Shemar James also has a bright future. He isn't the biggest but is probably by far our best tackling LB and the speed is very evident. 4 good building blocks from one draft is good work.
5) Two catches by the TE's yesterday despite Quinn having his safeties give all kinds of help on Lamb and Pickens. The middle of the field HAD to have been open almost every play, yet our QB basically ignored it and the TE position. Ferguson has 81 catches and 8 tds, but he averages barely 7 yds per catch and seemingly never makes a play down the seam anymore. He certainly doesn't run away from anyone either. He was far more athletic his first two seasons and was also a better blocker IMO. Schoon has no future here and Spann-Ford appears to be a potential solid #2 at best. They may have to think about finding a TE who can really stretch the seams and get some YAC in this offseason.
6) Priority 1 the day the season ends has to be a new Defensive Coordinator and several new defensive assistants. The only one I'd keep is Whitecotton. All the others should be gone. Brian Flores would be the absolute homerun potential DC hire, but he may get looks as a HC and will certainly get a new contract offer from the Vikings. Other names being tossed about, former DB coach Al Harris (never been a DC), Hoodie son Steve Belichick, Anthony Weaver, Jim Leonhard (his time is def coming for coordinator in NFL), current Vikes assistant Mike Pettine (who has ties to Schottenheimer and Rex Ryan) and our current DL coach Whitecotton, among many others. They also need new looks at DB and LB coaching slots. Whomever it is, it needs to be someone with some more modern day cover and pressure schemes. This defense we have currently requires no team to spend any real prep time for.
7) Great game for the RB's and especially Malik Davis, who had to carry the load after Williams got hurt. Davis will no doubt be sore today after going for 100+ yards on 20 tough carries. Season highs for 44 carries and 211 yards for the team.
8) In addition to the defensive staff overhaul that needs to happen, ST coach Nick Sorensen also needs to go. His unit other than Aubrey, one a couple of blocked kicks and the really slick fake FG has been awful. He's ruined one of the best punt/kick return guys in the league and the unit cannot cover kicks or putns worth a shit. They are also plagued by penalties even when Turpin does manage to get a decent return. Was not a good ST coach before and has continued that here.
Was not a pretty game at all and almost any other team would have beaten this Redskins roster by 3 or 4 tds yesterday. We had to go for it 6 times on 4th down (made all of them) to fend them off and barely win the game. Had they won this way with a lot of backups playing, I'd actually be pretty happy. But to win that way with almost all the starters was pretty pathetic. Would rather see them make a cocnerted effort to play more young guys next week (and especially Milton) but I bet they wont.
