The New Orleans Saints have agreed on a four-year, $12 million deal with pending free-agent running back Pierre Thomas.
The move, especially the length of the contract, comes as a bit of surprise considering Thomas, 26, played in only six games last season because of a lingering ankle injury. Thomas, however, was an instrumental part of the team's power rushing attack in its Super Bowl XLIV year.
Pierre Thomas' new deal with the Saints will take him through age 30.
Thomas (5-11, 215) is one of the league's toughest runners, but there are some durability concerns, and this new deal would take him through age 30, when players at his position typically decline dramatically.
The Saints signed Thomas as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Illinois is 2007. Since then, he has been the team's leading rusher, running for 1,939 yards and 18 touchdowns in 47 regular-season games.
With Thomas and promising second-year back Chris Ivory looking to be at the top of the backfield mix, it further clouds what the Saints will do with '06 second-overall pick Reggie Bush.
Bush, who turned 26 on Thursday, is due $11.8 million in 2011, the final year of his rookie contract. The team has hopes of restructuring Bush's contract so it can keep all three backs intact.
When healthy, Thomas and Bush form one of the NFL's best complementary 1-2 punches. They're each a perfect fit for their roles in Sean Payton's diverse offense.
