Count me in that group. I wonder if we should have kicked the tires on Bo Levi Mitchell or drafted Will Grier. What might we have in Mike White? Prescott's accuracy is troubling. Thoughts?

I love him but I'm sold on him at 15-20 million per year so he can have team around him,

30+, fuhgetaboutit!

but he'll get paid and we'll find out who was right in due time

I’m not sold on the guy. He seems slow in reading the field. His accuracy reminds me of the horrid Quincy Carter (what a dumb no talent this clown was) at times.
Time to move on...

the NFL overall has a coaching problem, not a QB problem. lots of shitty coaches keep getting recycled.

dak is not a bad qb. i think dak is a qb that you can win with.

i do think that, by having dak and using him in the best way, you should always be in the market for a backup QB (higher risk of injury than pocket qb)

so you're going to have to pay dak market value and i dont think jerry has ever had a problem paying sticker price.

My problem is accuracy. Very seldom hits running receivers in stride. They usually have to contort or reach back across their body particularly on crossing patterns. By a lot of measures he is around the 15th best QB in the league. I dont want to tie up 20% of the cap on him. At 10-15 million a year you can build around him, not so much at 30 million.

These salaries are out of control. There is NO WAY Dak is deserving of 30 mil. or so per year. I mean, come on. The day is soon coming that teams are going to say bye-bye to their quarterbacks after that second contract. Unless something changes, that will be the norm. Too much money for a single player and you're hamstrung from there.

Do I want the to have to pay Dak $30+ mil? Hell no, but that is the market. They’ve made it clear he’s their guy so either they pay him $30 mil this off season or they pay him $40+ next off season.

Ideally I would like to see them drafting a QB about every 3 years like Green Bay used to do back in the 90’s but that’s just not going to happen.

As for Dak as a player, he’s not a bad player. He will make some bad throws but ultimately he’s actually a really decent QB. His accuracy is hit and miss but his leadership skills are off the chart. He’s also durable and his numbers compared to Wentz are very comparable and even better in most cases. When you factor in his rushing numbers (yards and TD’s) and factor in that Wentz has missed time with another season ending injury Dak actually had a better year last year.

Is it technically an over pay if that’s what the market says?

I suspect everyone has a different answer but imo, if paying "market price" (which is currently top 5 money) for a QB I rank to be mid tier (15-18) because I'm desperate & have no other options, then in my estimation, I've over paid. Especially if paying that QB "market price" hurts the team by sucking up the salary cap, thereby lowering my chances of winning,

if the goal is to simply fill all the slots available on the team and meet or exceed the salary cap floor, then I guess I paid market and who gives damn

Dak's a dink and Dak QB that has had the benefit of pretty good defense that protected his 21 and 22 points per game average offense the last 2 years. That's bottom third of the NFL. They'll pay him like a top 5 QB and he's a mid level QB, at best. When your best player is a RB, you've got the wrong QB.

I think the key for them is that they have to continue to draft well. Also they need to allow the non-stars to walk or trade them. If they are going to pay Dak, DLaw, Zeke, Jaylon, Cooper, Zack Martin, Fredrick, and Tyron then they will. We’d to continue letting guys like Barry Church, and Beasley (and La’el Collins) walk while also looking to trade guys like Byron Jones. Going that route of course means they will never be big players in free agency, which I’m ok with.

Also factor in the annual increases in the salary cap (about $10 mil annually). So personally I’d be ok with them paying Dak $30 mil a year (or market value) as long as they continue to draft well and not over spend on mediocre guys on their roster. Sure some might consider Dak mediocre but the fact is in 3 years he’s been pretty good (based on numbers) in spite of not being the. OST accurate QB out there.

That’s definitely one way to look at it, and a lot of people would (and do) agree with you. However (devil’s advocate), if you look at his numbers, including his rushing numbers he out performed Carson Wentz last year and Wentz is legit staring at a $40 mil a year contract. He’s the “next big thing”. Also Dak was. It the reason they lost to the Rams in the playoffs, the run defense was (and coaching).

One could say that he’s the perfect QB for this team. He’s a good leader and by not being a great passer he allows this team to do what they do best which is run the ball. Now he does need to take more chances downfield and he does need to use his legs more. Those are things I personally think he’ll get better at as he gains experience.

To be a starter in the NFL you are probably ln the top percentage of elite athletes in the USA. Having said that, no I am not sold on Dak as our starter. I agree with some of the other posters, he is not accurate in to many situations. Statistically he looks great. He does not read the field well. Maybe he can improve but I don't want to wait. Cleveland is not waiting on Baker Mayfield to see if he can make all the throws. Chiefs already know Patrick Maholmes can make the throws necessary to win games. Why does JJ believe if he pays alot the player will magically become better?

Dont get me wrong, I love Dak in many ways but I am concerned about his passing accuracy, ability to read defenses, anticipate throws, etc and I honestly dont know what the hell I'm looking at so it makes me wonder if my naive eyes can see this, what dont I see? I guess the answer to that could be good or bad. He strikes me as good enough to win provided he has a good team around him but not good enough to carry the team by himself, so some of his salary has to go to his team mates so they all can win, both on the field and financially for years to come.

What I'd like Dallas to do is leverage the fact Dak is only getting paid about $1.4 Million (IIRC) in 2019 and do a 3 year contract now that allows Dak to make say $20 million in 2019 (an 18.6 million dollar increase in his 2019 Salary), $23 million in 2020 & $25 million in 2021 and then I'd guarantee 100% of the contract and emphasize he'll more than make up any perceived underpayment by getting more money outside of football in Dallas than he would with any other team.

This would cost the team an average of $22.7 million per year in real and cap dollars and give them a solid 3 year look before they commit to a 3rd contract. In turn, this would give Dak a nice chunk of cash guaranteed that should set him up for life.

If Dak kicks ass, he'll get a bank breaking 3rd contract, if he doesnt, then the Cowboys will have slightly overpaid but at least they can walk away completely in 3 years.

If Dak refuses and Dallas holds tight and lets him play out 2019, his value could go up or down. Lets say it takes a slight bump and he gets a deal for $35 million per season in 2020 & 2021 but only 50 mill is guaranteed, he'd end up with $51.4 million guaranteed after playing 2019 at 1.4 million at the risk of a catastrophic injury and over the same three years would make 71.4 million whereas if he took the deal I propose, he'd make $68 million but all of it guaranteed plus a huge payday on his 3rd deal coming if he outplayed his contract or he would have gotten away with robbing the bank should he regress, fall off a cliff or have a career ending injury.

obviously these numbers aren't absolute but it does illustrate how there is an opportunity to leverage the fact Dak is getting underpaid for 2019 and I think we would all agree he's being underpaid at 1.4 million

Let me ask you this Mr. B......who cares? And who cares that he might have outpreformed a guy coming off a serious knee injury? The reality is that even with the best RB in the game this offense averages 22 points per game. I really could care less what the Eagles do with Wentz or the Giants do with Eli or Jones. 3rd and 5 might as well be 3rd and 25 with this QB.

One could say that he’s the perfect QB for this team. He’s a good leader and by not being a great passer he allows this team to do what they do best which is run the ball. He "allows" this team to do what it does best (run the ball) because they have a QB that can't pass the ball. It doesn't have to be either or. And listen to yourself....you want your QB to use his legs more. That tells me alot of what you really think of Dak's passing ability. Would someone say "I want Brady to run more?" or "I want Mahomes to run more..." or "I want Rothlisberger to run more....." or "I want Rodgers to run more..." That's just code for "my QB can't throw the rock."

I absolutely think he should use his legs more because he’s a threat with his legs. I’m not saying he needs to run the ball 25 times a game but there are a handful of times where he should definitely take off. He’s smart when he runs and slides to avoid big hits. He’s shown that he can make big plays with his legs so why would you want to take that away from him?

He’ll never be Rodgers, Brady, or Brees with his arm. That’s obvious. He can get better though. You mention Big Ben. If there is anyone in this league that Dak is similar to its him. In Ben’s first three years he was a bus driver. He wasn’t out there slinging it around when he got that first Super Bowl. He had a great team around him with a great defense. His job was to manage the game and not fuck up. Sound familiar? As he gained experience his passing improved. That is the hope for Dak. He’s shown he can play in this league.

Let me ask you a question? Are you prepared to waist the team they have now to start over at QB? If not Dak the. What is YOUR plan for a QB? Because with the team they have now you’re not getting a top 5 pick to go draft a Baker Mayfield or Pat Mahommes. You’re also not prying Rodgers away from Green Bay or Brees away from New Orleans. So what’s your plan? Let Dak walk and draft a QB late in the 1st and hope that he has a start to his career like Dak did? So you plan to groom a guy for 4-5 years? Because if that’s your plan then this team’s window is likely closed. Realistically this team is primed to win right now. They will have about a 4 year window and right now Dak is their best realistic option. He has the leadership skills and we know that he won’t fuck it all up. I agree that he likely won’t win you the game with his arm but he’s definitely not going to lose you the game either. He’s going to rely on the best players on this team to do that. I guarantee you that if this team had a guy out there slinging it around and blowing games at the end by throwing int’s you would be screaming why aren’t they running it more when they have the best running back and OL in the NFL. We had that guy already in Romo and how many rings did he get?

Dak is nothing special. Average at best. He’s an errant passer.
Maybe we could trade him for two goats and a chicken. LOL.
Let’s move on...
