The Dallas Morning News' David Moore reports that with a little more than one hour before the draft is underway, the lobby for Ezekiel Elliott appears to be gaining steam with the Cowboys. Dallas has the No. 4 pick Thursday.
Elliott would join a crowded backfield that includes Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar and new free-agent acquisition Alfred Morris.
Elliott rushed for more than 1,800 yards each of the last two seasons with the Buckeyes. His average yardage per carry was above 6 in both seasons. He rushed for 23 touchdowns in 2015.
Here’s what the experts have said about Elliott:
Jon Machota: Elliott is the best running back in this class. Expect to see him start from Day 1, giving the Cowboys an every-down player capable of a 1,500-yard season.
David Moore: Is Elliott an elite back? The majority of scouts appear to think that’s the case. An argument can be made that he’ll have a greater impact in 2016 than any other rookie. He could burst on the scene the way Todd Gurley did for the St. Louis/now LA Rams last season with one big difference: Elliott’s debut won’t be delayed because he’s coming off an ACL injury. The Cowboys place a lot of faith in their offensive line. It’s justified. Darren McFadden resurrected a career that appeared dead behind that line in ‘15. If you accept the premise that a good back can have an outstanding season behind this line, what could an outstanding back do? What would that mean for the remainder of Romo’s career, and how could that aid the defense? A four-year rookie contract in the neighborhood of $23 million doesn’t sound like too much to pay for that potential impact. It would be considered a bargain in the third and fourth year if Elliott’s production meets or exceeds projections. But it doesn’t make fiscal sense to add Elliott to the mix of McFadden, Morris and Lance Dunbar. It’s a poor allocation of limited resources.
Brandon George: Elliott may be a difference-maker. But it’s a five-year window with him. But hey, the Cowboys are working with a five-year window. Tony Romo’s got a five-year window. So maybe you do bring Elliott in and make the big final push here with Romo and Witten this next five years and see what you can do. Because he obviously helps the offense in a lot of ways. Scouts rave about Elliott’s vision to find holes and hit them quickly. He’s a physical back who always seems to fall forward; a solid pass catcher but excellent run blocker.
Rick Gosselin: He can make this a better team, a better offense, and his legs should help keep the Dallas defense off the field as Murray did in 2014. But that defense is still going to have to play 26-28 minutes per game and if you can’t rush the passer, you can’t get off the field. If the Cowboys let Bosa slide and take the RB, that pass rusher board will thin out awfully quick by the time the Cowboys go back on the clock at 34.
Kevin Sherrington: If you believe in Elliott, you don’t say, “Well, we signed Alfred Morris.” Think how that will sound in five years if Elliott has racked up 7,500 yards. Elliott does everything well. Even a great blocker. Romo would be glad to know the kid has his back.
Tim Cowlishaw: I think [drafting Elliott] is the best way to fix a defense that needs considerable help. Yes, defense. If Elliott arrives and runs behind this line as he would seem capable of doing - think DeMarco Murray in 2014 - how high a level does this offense reach with the return of Tony Romo and Dez Bryant? And, ultimately, that’s how you go about fixing this defense. You construct an offense that scores 30 points a game and dare opponents to keep up.
Bob Sturm: He is 20 years old and possesses size and athleticism that is phenomenal. But, what really impresses you about Elliott is that he plays the game in a way that demonstrates how much he loves every component of the sport. He does everything and he does it with a commitment that suggests he is a team leader. … The guy can do it all and would be a fantastic addition to any team. Elliott is very young, strong, and healthy and would fill a real need for any team that needs a RB

I hope my home team the Rams take Goff so that leaves Wentz to PHI
I just hope whichever one GOES TO PHI turns out to be a bust! That way PHI not only doesn't get their QB of the future before we do but they destroy their future drafts to do it
That would be the best possible scenario for Dallas
Otherwise PHI ends up with their QB of the future and we get stuck in a downward spiral of QB hell and end up in last place in the division for at least a decade

Worked out well for us when we solicited Romo's opinion on Escobar. IIRC had him watch film on him and sign off on taking him.

No one is calling Garrett out on his Weeden and Cassel disaster which led to losing a draft pick and then bc there was no RB plan they gave up another pick for CHRISTINE Michael who he cut, and gave the Raiders a pick bc they had no speed at WR. He singlehandedly limited Dallas offense to only those who have had exposure to his system. So Dallas lost 3 picks, you know Geoff Swaim was his as well, and then with nothing to show for Michael or Cassel is just terrible management of talent and the future picks that Dallas had to give up from his mismanagement.
