Marion Barber III held for evaluation
June, 16, 2014
Associated Press

MANSFIELD, Texas -- Former NFL running back Marion Barber III was detained and taken for a mental health evaluation after police were called to a Dallas suburb.

Mansfield police spokesman Thad Penkala said it wasn't clear what led to the calls that prompted a response from police Sunday night. Penkala said officers took Barber to a hospital for a mental health check based on conversations with the former Pro Bowl back.

Penkala said Barber was not arrested or facing charges. He said police wouldn't know whether he was still hospitalized because they wouldn't be notified.

The 31-year-old Barber spent six of his seven seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before finishing his career in Chicago in 2011. He rushed for 4,780 yards and 53 touchdowns.

His running style killed his career, but he was fun to watch.

He always did seem a bit weird. Or maybe it was the scolding from Garrett for not wearing a tie that did his mental state in.

By my math that is a TD every 90 yards.

Regarding his mental health, he is probably still struggle with the apparent contradiction of being that big, strong and forceful as a runner but easily tripped by any attacking molecule in his path. Once the 150 pound DBs in the league saw that he fell if tapped his shoelace, the MBIII wave of terror was over. Who knew a shoelace could be a truckstop?

I barely care about the running backs currently on the roster - let alone former guys.

He also couldn't swing and hit people in the helmet like he used to after the NFL banned it.

That run against the Patriots was absolutely legendary.

I was eating popcorn at the time at my mom's house and told her what would happen.
