Imagine the Dallas Cowboys' defensive line without DeMarcus Ware. That could become a reality in 2014.

Sports Illustrated NFL writer Doug Farrar predicts Ware will be the "most surprising (salary) cap casualty" this off-season.

"Ware is getting up in years, but letting him go would be an admission that Jerry Jones and son Stephen have mangled their cap situation badly over the last few seasons — which, of course, they have," Farrar writes.

This past Wednesday, SportsDay's David Moore reported that Ware isn't scheduled -- yet -- to have surgery on his troublesome right elbow. The right elbow was just one of many injuries that plagued Ware over the course of the 2013 season. He considered having surgery on the elbow last off-season, but opted to let it improve with rest.

Ware had his worst season in 2013 in terms of sacks, finishing a career-low six as he battled his way through several injuries. Ware wasn’t himself this season as he dealt with a torn quad, a hyper-extended elbow and herniated disk.

Ware, who will be 32 next season, is scheduled to make $12.2 million in 2014 and count $16 million against the salary cap.

The Cowboys could ask Ware to take a pay cut this off-season. Ware said after the season he's fine with restructuring his contract again but not OK with a pay cut.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked at Senior Bowl practices if he believes Ware is in decline.

"I don't, that's a pretty complex assessment," Jones said. "And I don't think we'll ever know. I don't know that you know specifically and can put your finger on talent level. You can gauge it by production. We call that, experience, talent level, and he should be benefiting."

The combination of Ware's age, reduced production in 2013 and rich history with the Cowboys make his issue one of the off-season's trickiest to solve.

It appears unlikely the Cowboys will have the cap room it needs to re-sign free-agent defensive tackle Jason Hatcher. Can the Cowboys go into next season without Ware and Hatcher and have any realistic shot at improvement in the front four?

As much as I'd hate to see the guy in another uniform, it might actually make the most sense to move on.

He's not the difference maker he once was.

Just cannot stay healthy and he has had the neck injury or a re-aggravation of it each of the last 4 years. One of my all time favorites but I agree at the cost he is asking, it is time to move on.

Trade him, even if it's for a couple of 3rd round picks. Same cap hit for trading or cutting him. New team can rip up contract and sign him to new terms.

I wish there was another Jerry out there to trade him to, but there isn't so I don't see a trade happening.

I think a team like the Cardinals would consider him. They need to close the gap between them and SF/Seattle.

Jets and Vikings maybe.

I don't think this is true unless they trade him after June 1st. If they trade him before, isn't all the prorated money immediately counted on the cap?

Trading him or cutting him before June 1st is the exact same cap hit. The June 1st cut is an entirely different thing. Trading him or cutting him frees up around $7.4M. Designating him a June 1st cut frees up over $12M BUT that room doesn't free up until June so we would not be able to use any of that $12M in cap room until then, when basically all of the free agents have already signed.
