Jones says Cowboys have learned from 'disappointing times,' and he is inspired to do everything he can to win games

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the last three years have been “disappointing times,” but that everyone has learned from them.

“We’ve looked at how other teams have gotten there, and the circumstances,” Jones said. “I was just watching part of the Thanksgiving Day game between us and the Redskins. It does do one thing for me, and that is: do everything we can do in the offseason with the idea in mind it’s this year.”

Jones said Tony Romo’s new contract and the franchise tag on Anthony Spencer are part of that plan.

“Certainly, we want to look ahead to the future a little bit, but right now, it’s about now,” Jones said.

He said the last three seasons have put resolve in him.

“I think all it’s done for right now, for right here, is inspire me, on a personal basis, and us to do everything we can possibly do, and to do it as good as we can do it, to start winning some games,” Jones said. “Put those in place, win more games than we did last year, and then maybe some good things will happen to us n the playoffs. And if that should happen, maybe some other good things.”

He should do that every year, especially when the team has an aging core, but thank God he watched part of that Thanksgiving Day game.

He's obviously jealous of Washington. If this team wins less than 10 games this year I hope they beat us twice.

When they showed the additions/departures graphic, our "additions" of Will Allen, Justin Durant, and Dante Rosario made me sad.

It looked like Plan B Free Agency from the late 80's/early 90's where you could only sign guys that the other teams didn't protect (Teams could protect 37 players).

Hell of an off-season though, we signed three back-up caliber players and traded down to the bottom of the 1st. Huge influx of talent.

I love how he loves to tell people how he wants to do everything within his power to win, but no one ever says "Like hire a real GM?"

You ever notice he always embraces the flavor of the moment teams but fails to grasp what really it takes to win?

I bet if you pinned him down, he boils it down to luck over skill in assembling a good football team.

That's another thing I never understood by the media or fans. Of course the owner is going to say the head coach is fine. First off, Jerry is an eternal optimist. Second, almost every NFL team goes into the season thinking they have a chance to compete.

Do people really expect Jerry to say "Hell yeah Jason is on the hot seat!"?

Privately, I'm sure Jerry completely believes he's given Garrett a great roster so if we don't win, it's clearly Garrett's fault.

Jerry's not going to tell us if it's do or die for Garrett this year. That's not how he rolls.

I thought about that, but then I remembered that he was actually telling the truth when he said that he's content with Costa and the rest of that shitty oline.

It's entirely possible that this senile old man is actually telling the truth here too. No one disputes that he's evolving into a Donald Sterling/Al Davis hybrid before our very eyes. He doesn't believe in spending big on coaching. He also really does not value head coaching at all. To quote B2K, it appears that Jimmy left an icebox where Jerry's heart used to be. The guy really despises all true head coaches.

Yeah, listening to the opening press conference of training camp, it seems pretty clear that Jerry isn't worrying about what Garrett has to do to keep the coaching job next year. Jerry is in optimistic mode about most everything.

He said he's excited by Jason's reaction to the disappointing season(s). Blah, blah, blah.

I think it's more complex than what I said... I think he wouldn't really tell us if it was do or die for Garrett this year.

But I also don't think he knows if it's do or die this year. He's not a planner per se, as far as that goes. He's susceptible to the whims of game to game and year to year. There are all sorts of possibilities of what could happen this season, and I could just as easily see Garrett fired mid-season as I could see him being here next year regardless of whether we get a win in the playoffs.

I don't think he despises head coaches, but he clearly doesn't think that you have to have a great head coach in the NFL to be successful.

Head coaches have a place.

They just can't be bigger than he is.

The only reason he tolerated Parcells as long as he did is because he needed his grotesque abomination of a stadium green-lighted. Once that happened, he really did not value him at all.

Fat Wade was a complete turd who would never get bigger than The J.

Garrett is the same way. He's just too fricking boring.

It's all about ego. No great head coach is egoless. But there is only enough room for Jerry's.

Exactly. Jimmy perma-scarred his little ego and now he goes out of his way to seek out people who will coddle to his demands and stroke his cock.

I really don't see this team acquiring a real head coach until Jerry dies. And even then, it seems like Stephen is more of a Jim Buss than a Jim Irsay-type of son.

I agree with Pep that it's certainly possible JJ could impulsively can Garrett out of frustration, but the notion of a legit leader seems like a pipedream. Hell, Dan Reeves lasted about 25 mins here and that wasn't even as a coach. Jerry knows exactly what is necessary and he does everything he can to avoid it.

Strong allegation against a man who hired such highly regarded and decorated coaches as Dave Campo, Chan Gailey and Wade Phillips.

Its actually pisses me off becaues I'm not even a smart guy, but even I know that coaching matters more in the NFL than any other professional sport. By a mile.

Why do we continue supporting this team with Jerry as GM? Do y'all realize how damn stupid it makes us look?

It seems that Jerry thinks that hiring Parcells and having it NOT bring a title reinforced his theory that you don't have to have a great head coach.

Jerry: "OK OK, I'l' hire a 'real' head coach now. So what you think he's over the hill? He's a proven guy.

Jerry, 4 years later: "See, I tried to do it y'all's way. Didn't work out did it? Back to Jerry-palooza."

I can't quit being a fan. But I stopped buying merchandise. And I'm not raising my sons to be Cowboys fans.

But yeah, I've been a fan for too long to not be a Cowboys fan. I do find myself growing more apathetic towards the team though. Like, training camp starts today or yesterday or whatever, and I don't care. Years ago I called Directv and spent almost a half hour on the phone trying to figure out how I could get the LA CBS affiliate that was broadcasting the Oakland/Cowboys preseason game because I didn't want to miss a snap. Now... meh.

I'm amped about Rivals II, but Cowboys football is just kind of blah to me.
