IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys have proclaimed they would like to keep a No. 3 quarterback, but they didn’t do it last season and do not appear to be inclined to do so this year.

But that could have been different had the waiver wire been a little more friendly.

The Cowboys have been thwarted twice in the last few weeks in their attempts to add a more veteran backup quarterback behind Kyle Orton.

On Tuesday, Jacksonville was awarded quarterback Mike Kafka after New England cut him in favor of Tim Tebow. Late in May, the Cowboys missed out on Thaddeus Lewis, who was awarded to Detroit after he was cut by Cleveland.

Teams are awarded players off the wire based on their record from the previous season. Jacksonville finished 2-14 in 2012; Cleveland was 4-12.

The Cowboys have Nick Stephens and Dalton Williams behind Orton. Stephens has been working with the second-team offense as Tony Romo recovers from surgery to remove a cyst from his back.

Lewis started last year’s season finale for Cleveland against Pittsburgh, completing 22-of-32 passes for 204 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 24-10 loss. Kafka played in four games in 2011 with Philadelphia with two interceptions.

As for Tebow, the Cowboys had no interest. The lack of interest had more to do with Tebow being a poor fit for the offense than any sort of circus that would have come to Valley Ranch.

Kafka would've been a good pick up. I remember their being Romo comparisons back when he came out in the draft a few years ago.

Although if Andy Reid can't do anything with you, then it's doubtful Wade Wilson could.

They have put in two waiver claims and lost so they obviously want a better option for 3rd team QB. Why not sign a few veterans for vet minimum salaries and I don't know, let them compete. Better that we hope scrubs like Nick Stephens suddenly get better?

What veterans are out there? Vince Young? :suicide

At least with a young developmental guy there's a chance he could turn into the next Romo. Slim, but you know what you have with veterans. The third guy should be a prospect.

Ideally yes but if Nick Stephens and the other UDFA guys aren't getting the job done in camp (while Romo is out) then we are hurting the development of our receivers, rb's, overall offense. Hurting the defense too since these scrubs aren't giving them quality looks.

If we can find a young prospect then by all means, sign and develop him. In the meantime, get guys better than Nick Stephens. Especially if all of the reports from camp are accurate.

Tyler Wilson was sure that Dallas was going to draft him. If theses numbnuts had any sense, they should have drafted him and they would have a good third QB that could develop.

They're gonna wait until Romo can't possibly play anymore before they start searching. I can already see it.
