Report: Cowboys can’t franchise Tony Romo after the 2013 season

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, there’s language in Tony Romo’s contract that would keep the Dallas Cowboys from being able to use the franchise tag on him after the 2013 season.

“Based on paragrphs 27 and 28 of his contract Tony Romo has three years left on his deal, kind of. If he’s still on the Cowboys’ roster at the end of the 2013 league year, the final two years void. But what that means is all that happens after the franchise tag window is up. So when Tony Romo’s contract voids, he will not be able to be franchise tagged.

Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com has another good reason why the Cowboys can’t place the franchise tag on Romo.

Romo has all of the leverage to get a deal done this offseason. The Cowboys really can’t wait until next offseason to work out an extension.

If I was Romo's agent, this is what I would be doing. Because as an agent, I would be looking to protect Romo, and I would be looking to protect him. Jerry thinks because Payton/Parcells hit on Romo as a UFDA, he has to outdo them in the same manner with the OL, hence why we have Bernadeaun't, Livings, and Costa being pushed.

Romo is what fills your stadium Jerry.

If I was Romo's agent, I'd be pointing out to how far the 49ers have gone with their OL and a bus driver at QB.

Steve Dennis (who hates romo) said earlier in the week that he was told Jerry doesn't want to pay romo.

I'm assuming he meant big money.

Seeing that it falls in line with Steve's opinion though I don't know how much faith to put in it.

Dennis isn't the only one who has said that. I've also seen where another media guy (don't recall who) tweeted that Jerry didn't want to overpay him.

It's ridiculous. There are two QB's in the league who are week in and week out asked to do more for their teams than anyone else in the league: Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo.

Rodgers has the SB ring, so he'll justifiably get his 25 mil a year. Romo deserves 18-19m a year, IMO.

Yeah, this team is completely devoid of talent. There's nothing here to help Romo at all.

Romo's a good player, some weeks he is a great player. But he also has weeks where he is the sole reason we lose too. You see other teams' defensive players constantly comment on how they know if they stay patient, Romo will make a screw up play. Alot of QB's could come in here and do what he does with the trype of talent at the skill positions we have year in and year out.

I believe that's Tony's mindset too. I don't think it's about the money for him. More of him gauging the future of this team and his long term goal of ultimately winning a Championship. He talks about it often and may go elsewhere to fulfill his quest with a better contender.

By the way, one other thing thats amusing is hearing a few folks who bitch, piss and moan about mis-managing the cap, seemingly support the idea of breaking the bank for a 33+ year old QB who has won one playoff game in his career.

He says it's 26-28 mil, with 8 mil prorated coming forward. No idea where he gets that number. The Franchise Tag for a QB was under 15 mil THIS year.

Aaron Rodgers is going to be the highest paid QB in the NFL, at 25 mil (reportedly).

Franchise Tag is the average of the top 5 contracts at the position.

You don't have to be a mensa member to know that that number can't be higher than the highest paid guy.

I only agree if the OL is upgraded.

If it isnt, then nothing is going to change because IMO, playcalling isnt an issue. Its subpar blocking and the lack of a consistent run game.

But those guys dont look so good either when the OL cant block well enough. I really dont think anything would be wrong with the offense if the OL were above average, or in alot of games just average.
