Who will be the next to go?

After the Cowboys released three players on Monday -- the biggest name being safety Gerald Sensabaugh -- who might be the next player to be sent packing from Valley Ranch?

We look at four possibilities:

1. Marcus Spears. A valued member of the defensive line, Spears has played well as a starter and a backup. The team, however, could be focused on using younger players. It's unknown if Spears has a role in the new 4-3 alignment since it requires pass rushers up front and he's more of a run stopper. If Spears is released, the Cowboys only would save $600,000 -- so it's not a big deal if he stays.

2. Dan Connor. The Cowboys have asked Connor, who is scheduled to make $3 million in base salary, to take a paycut or be released. Connor, an inside linebacker in a 4-3, takes up $4.3 million of salary cap space and the Cowboys would like to reduce that number or eliminate it. With the team looking to go younger, the Cowboys might let him go, but his experience in a 4-3 is of value. Connor most likely won't play one of the outside linebacker spots as a starter, but could as a reserve.

3. Doug Free. It seems, for now, that the starting right tackle has a home. The Cowboys could cut Free after June 1 and save $7 million, but that won't happen until the summer. The Cowboys are under the cap right now, so Free's status seems secure. After more offseason meetings, the Cowboys could move on from Free -- especially if they draft a tackle.

4. Lawrence Vickers. He was supposed to be an upgrade over Tony Fiammetta but the Cowboys' run game finished 31st overall. Even with injuries to Felix Jones and DeMarco Murray, the Cowboys expected more from Vickers, who enters the final year of his deal with a $1.2 million base salary and counts $1.3 million against the salary cap. The Cowboys would save $1.1 million by releasing him.

LOLz. Who's more overrated every year than this guy?

The first of those to go should be Connor. Straight can't play.

None will be missed. Spears counts so little it might be worthhwile to keep around for limited duty.

Buy plane tickets for Vickers and Connor at any time.

Hail a cab for Free on June 2nd.

Free not being cut or restructured really emphasizes the whole Jerry can't admit his mistakes mentality.

There hasn't been a recent draft pick I've been so excited about, that turned into pure shat, moreso than Spears.

The guy looked like a big, angry, QB killer in college. Just relentless. I was more excited about us getting him than I was Ware.

:lol Then remember how much he barked about how good he'd do in Wades defense? Yeah, I ate that up. Finally we were going to use him right I thought.

Man... I mean, he's been serviceable and all. Not a bust like Carpenter. But not at all what I expected. I won't miss him only because I barely even notice him anymore.

Same here.

In our defense, I think the talent was there. He was/is just lazy and not very driven.

Cowboys in discussions about new deal with LB Dan Connor

The Cowboys are in discussions with Dan Connor about a new contract that would allow him to stay with the team, multiple sources confirmed Tuesday.

This off-season, management had asked Connor, a reserve linebacker, to take a pay cut so the Cowboys could clear room under the NFL’s $123 million salary cap.

Connor’s 2013 cap number is $4.35 million and his base salary is $3 million. Connor, 27, signed a two-year, $6.5 million contract with the Cowboys last March after spending the previous four seasons with Carolina.

In 2012, Connor made 56 tackles and started eight games after Sean Lee suffered a season-ending toe injury last October. In November, Connor was sidelined against Philadelphia and Atlanta because of a stinger he incurred in a loss to the New York Giants. Connor’s value to the Cowboys appears to be tied to the considerable experience he has in the 4-3 defense, the scheme Dallas adopted after hiring Monte Kiffin as a coordinator in January.

Vickers should be released.

Connor should be released and then arrested for stealing.

I think it's funny that they're taking this hard-line approach with Connor. He's making pittance compared to what Free and Austin are.

As bad as Free is, he is still a better player than Connor, and Austin definitely is.

Still, they need their contracts restructured just as badly.

I was fine with them restructing Austin's deal, because if he is healthyn (a big question for him annually) he is a good player.

Free I think they should cut their losses with, but even doing that there's no advantage to doing it right this second because even if they designate him a post-June 1 cut, they dont get the cap savings till then anyway.
