Witten says Cowboys didn't play Cowboy football, got outplayed, can't afford to win one, lose one

Jason Witten said the Cowboys didn’t play Cowboy football, and they can’t go on winning one, losing one.

“You’re looking .500 right in the face,” he said. “You can’t do that.”

The veteran tight end, an inspiration in the Giants victory on opening night, was instead part of the problem Sunday in the loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

He dropped three passes and said the entire team made mistakes.

“We just didn’t execute plays, myself included,” he said. “We had an opportunity to make catches, make runs, make good plays, and we didn’t do it. So if that’s out-physicaling us, maybe they did. I don’t know. I have to get to the tape.

“Ultimately, they played a better game than we did. We didn’t play one up. That wasn’t our football team. And we’ve got to get it fixed. No excuses.”

Witten said he was also disappointed that the Cowboys didn’t recover from the 10-0 hole.

“I think that’s disappointing not being able to handle that and regroup and get back out there and get some things going,” he said. “That’s, I think, the disappointing thing. Coach mentioned it. Really in all three phases, we never turned the corner.

“No other way to say, it’s a disappointing loss. We need to give them credit. They outplayed us. But that wasn’t Cowboy football that we played. Disappointing. Frustrating. Unacceptable. We need to get it fixed. It’s about what we do from this point forward. You want to get momentum in this league after a big win. We knew coming in that Giants game was over. We needed to handle it better. We didn’t play good football. I didn’t play good football. Our team didn’t play well. We need to get it fixed.”

He regretted the missed chance at starting 2-0.

“Too many opportunities just missed,” he said. “Thinking one thing, doing another. We didn’t execute well enough. You can’t do that and expect to win games in this league. It’s definitely disappointing. Needed to get to 2-0. But we’ve got to get it fixed. It’s a long season.”
