Murray Could Be the Dallas Cowboys' Difference Maker This Year
by Danny Webster

Take a moment to think of an answer to this hypothetical question before continuing:

What if DeMarco Murray never got hurt near the end of last year and missed the final three games of the year when the Dallas Cowboys fell fast and hard?

If Wednesday night's performance is any speculation, the list of possible answers could be a mile long.

While the unlikely lethal connection of Tony Romo and Kevin Ogletree was making headlines in the Cowboys' impressive 24-17 victory over the New York Giants, the second-year running back from Oklahoma returned to his post as the Dallas starting running back and proceeded to remind everyone that he can be the difference maker for this team going forward.

Murray couldn't play in the season finale when the Giants dominated the Cowboys in the NFC East title game last year, but his return to the lineup showed that Dallas presents a balanced attack that will have to be reckoned with this year.

Picking up where he left off last year before getting hurt, Murray carried the ball 20 times for a game-high 131 yards and averaging close to seven yards a carry.

Think of that: Murray carried 20 times for over 130 yards, and the dual running back attack of Ahmad Bradshaw and first-round pick David Wilson combined for 19 carries for 82 yards throughout the entire game.

That type of production shows two things: First, the Cowboys' run defense has more than improved from this time last year, and second, Murray is the X-Factor not lined up at receiver that this team has been looking for for years.

Taking into account that Felix Jones may be gone after this season, along with the occasional moments that Romo may have an awful game, having that luxury of a running back that can finally take the pressure off of the passing attack on a consistent basis may be the key that gets the Cowboys over the hump this year.

But, first thing's first: He needs to stay healthy. It was unfortunate that he went down the way he did last year with that fractured ankle, and if he stayed healthy, he could've been the first Dallas running back since Julius Jones in 2006 to rush over 1,000 yards.

If he can stay healthy and provide another year of fantastic production, a pay day may be in Murray's future come training camp next year. But the lack of consistency in running backs has been the biggest problem for the Cowboys in recent years with Julius Jones, Marion Barber and now Felix Jones.

Murray still has a lot to prove.

But without going too far into the future, the Cowboys were more than impressive against New York, and Murray's ability to get those extra yards in the second half was a big proponent into Dallas pulling away and leaving New York with the win.

And if he can continue this kind of production, that hypothetical question I asked at the beginning may turn into a different kind of question that may be more legitimate:

Could DeMarco Murray's level of play get the Cowboys to where they want to go this year?

Just remember before you answer: one week down, 16 more to go.

Anything that can take some of the pressure off of Romo is a good thing. Not only in terms of slowing the pass rush, but also having someone who can shoulder some of the burden ... so that Romo doesn't have to carry the team entirely by himself.

In the past, Romo has had to play at a near super human level, drive after drive, for the Cowboys to have a chance of winning. Here's hoping Murray can provide some relief (and put the team over the top more often than not).

Murray's really good. Hopefully he can stay out there for all 16 games.

Teams will definitely have to start worrying about our running game with him out there, and thats gonna open up even more downfield opportunities for Romo and our receivers.

He definitley has something about him that makes me think he has it. I love that he runs with an anger about him and punishes defenders for tackling him.
Health will be his only down fall

I know this, we better not run him too much because he's not going to last going at that pace for too many carries.

I imagine if Felix had been healthy he would have had a few carries.

The guy gets hurt every time he is tackled though and I have to wonder how long before they give felix's carries to someone else.

The giants game those is Tailor made for Murray. Have to be tough and physical. That is why barber was always good against him.

Felix I have a feeling is done here. I think Garret is done with him. Failing the conditioning test was the final straw. He will play some, but I think Tanner takes some snaps from him this season.
He will certainly be gone next year

Murray Could Be the Dallas Cowboys' Difference Maker This Year = Yes

Would like to see Garrett get him more involved in the passing game with screens and get him mismatched with LB's over the middle or in the flats.

I think the Giants were scared of that. They were giving so much help deep (and still getting killed by Romo) that they couldn't leave anyone up. We saw that affect when tuck or umenyiora stopped rushing to peel off to the flat to cover Murray, Romo switched up and went deep to Austin.

Jerry Jones: DeMarco Murray ‘reminds you of a gunfighter’; ‘He’s ready to roll’
By Jon Machota / Special Contributor
12:45 pm on September 7, 2012

The physical nature of DeMarco Murray’s running style was one of the many topics Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones discussed Friday morning on his radio show.

Murray showcased his aggressiveness on multiple occasions in Wednesday night’s 24-17 win over the New York Giants, rushing for 131 yards on 20 carries.

“He makes a lot of contact with that head,” Jones said on 105.3 [KRLD-FM] The Ticket’s Elf and Slater show. “It just shows how physical he is, especially at the end of his runs. I’m going to tell you, that’s demoralizing for a defense to get a back that’s going to give more to you than you give to him on the end of a run. I think that paid off.

“He’s a big guy, so a lot of times he’s being tackled by guys that aren’t that big, those d-backs in the secondary. He delivers the blow. We saw [Marion] Barber able to do that. Of course this one, Murray, has got speed and got exceptional awareness. If you ever meet him, his handshake is devastating. He’ll bring you to your knees.

“He really approaches everything he does in such a firm, aggressive but business-like manner. He’s a good player.”

Murray’s most impressive run came late in the third quarter on second-and-three at the Cowboys’ 27-yard line. Last year’s third-round pick looked to be stopped for a loss but found a way to get free and burst to the outside. Murray then scampered 48 yards before lowering his head into Giants defensive back Antrel Rolle, instead of simply stepping out of bounds.

“I think that’s a mentality, an attitude, whatever you want to call it,” Jones said. “But the good news is that he’s got speed. We saw the big run. He basically reversed his field in the backfield and made the run. That takes a lot of speed. Plus he’s got power.”

Jones said it was fair to say that Murray plays with a chip on his shoulder. But as Jones added, “That doesn’t mean he’s not nice to be around. He reminds you of a gunfighter, man. He’s ready to roll.”

Cowlishaw: What DeMarco Murray did that Emmitt Smith probably wouldn't have even tried to do
SportsDayDFW.com

Columnist Tim Cowlishaw answered questions in a chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.

Comment From Tomba ... Dallas sacked Manning 3 times last night. Of those, how many were "coverage sacks?"
Tim Cowlishaw: Having trouble remembering each one, I know one by Ware was certainly what you would call a "coverage" sack. But the other one by Ware was typically great rush from him.

Comment From Ted ... Aikman would have been sacked 8+ times last night. Will Romo ever get the credit he deserves?
Tim Cowlishaw: Not until this team is playing in mid-January. Or later.

Comment From stan ... When the giants scored in 4q, I said here we go once more. If romo hadn't converted that big 3rd down, do you think giants would have scored and tied game?
Tim Cowlishaw: I would say no. Obviously that's just a guess and I realize they had two minutes. But they would have been out of timeouts, and just had had a lot of trouble making any catches down the field.

Comment From Wade ... The run game really seemed to open up as soon as Romo got the passing game going, with Murray and company really wearing down the Giants in the 2nd half. Wouldn't it make sense to attack most defenses this way going forward as opposed to trying to open the passing game by running the ball early?
Tim Cowlishaw: I thought the run game opened up when Garrett stopped giving the ball to Vickers on fourth-and-one and gave it to Murray the rest of the night.

Comment From stan ... I thought murrays 48 yd run was a turning point, it seemed to just suck the air out of the giants. One of the best runs from a cowboy back in a long time. Your take on murray?
Tim Cowlishaw: Unbelievable run, a play that maybe got lost in the shuffle a bit with Ogletree's career night and Austin's big finish. Haven't seen a Cowboys back even capable of trying something like that since maybe Dorsett. No, I'm not forgetting Emmitt, but that kind of changing directions twice wasn't really his style.
------------------------------------
Oh, I don't know about you, but Murray's run immediately made me think of one of Emmitt's TD runs against Atlanta in 1992...

I like that as well. But unlike Barber, he doesn't go out of his way to seek contact. If it's there and he cannot get out of the way, he just squares up.

Probably start seeing Tanner get a few more carries each week IMO

I wonder if they revisit the trade Felix Jones idea before the deadline.

That'd be great but I doubt they can get anything for him at this point.
