I think they are required to keep him on the active roster now, whereas we were going to place him on IR had he cleared waivers.

He just underwent surgery and is out for the year, so they must like his upside & potential to claim him and have him tie up a 53 man roster spot all yr.

Disappointed to see this. I always thought we gave up on Peterman too soon (we did, and now he is a solid starter for the Lions). Hope this isnt a repeat.

Kind of upset about it, but it looks like Arkin is in the future plans at OG and we could do better than Nagy at C, where I was hoping Nagy would eventually start over Costa. Arkin and Mackenzie (he's relatively young and inexperienced) continuing to grow, and getting a quality C to replace Costa sometime in the near future, hopefully next year, and I think we'll be alright.

Oh and probably replace Free in a year or 2. Hopefully.

Help me understand this..Why did we have to waive him (or anyone), hope he clears waivers, and then put him on IR? Why couldn't we just put him on IR? If Witten was done for the year we wouldn't waive him first..he'd go directly on Injured Reserve.

Maybe something with the new cba?

You cant put a player straight onto IR until after the final cutdowns.

Because a team claimed him, they have to keep him on the active roster or release him. They cant IR him now.

I think we could have kept him and IR'd him, but then he'd have counted on the 90. This way he wouldn't have taken up a roster spot. We just assumed no one would claim him since he was hurt.

It does have something to do with the new CBA and the expanded preseason rosters IIRC

Teams have done this for years, nothing in the new cba changed that. The Eagles did it to the Giants last year. The Pats did the same thing to the Giants earlier this year. The Giants have done it to them in the past. It's a way to weaken other teams and roll the dice on an inexpensive hit to your team for a year. I could go on, but it's always been this way as far as I can remember.

You have to keep em til the last cut or roll the dice.

No, it doesn't. Half a fag, Joe Gibbs is responsible for this rule. Years ago he used to invent injuries for young players so he could stash them on IR. The league finally caught on and implemented this rule. During camp, you have to expose a player to waivers before you can IR them. So teams won't take the chance of trying to hide a young talent for a year or two.

If somebody like Witten was to get injured, they'd just hang on to him until after final cutdowns, then put him directly on IR. It would eat up a roster spot during camp, but that's a small price to pay instead of exposing one of your stars to waivers.

Maybe I'm confusing it with something else I read this offseason about the expanded TC rosters.
