Always looking for the next Tony Romo or Miles Austin, the Cowboys have no prejudice against rookie free agents, as they showed in 2011.

By the end of the season, seven first-year players who were undrafted in April had been on the Cowboys roster, the exact number of players selected by the Cowboys to contribute at one point or another.

While kicker Dan Bailey was the only undrafted player to start for the team, the Cowboys also got help from safety Mana Silva, linebacker Alex Albright, guard/center Kevin Kowalski, punter Chris Jones and running back Phillip Tanner. Wide receiver Andre Holmes had been added from the practice squad by the end of the year, but never dressed.

Of the 2011 class, only one drafted rookie, fifth-round cornerback Josh Thomas, did not remain with the team out of training camp, after he was claimed on waivers by Carolina.

Late picks Dwayne Harris and Shaun Chapas spent significant time on the practice squad, while fourth-round guard David Arkin never played.

"I think it's important that you try to make the right decisions for your football team on draft day," Jason Garrett said of the rookie class in October. "And then, once draft day is over I think the worst mistake that an organization can make is to say 'We drafted these guys, we're keeping these guys,' so you can say publicly, 'Look, we have eight draft picks on our team.' I think that's a bad decision.

"We try to create a competitive environment. We've been very happy with all of our draft picks so far and the role that they're going to have for our football team now and in the future. When you draft some of those guys in the later rounds, hopefully your team is good enough where it's hard for them to make your football team. And then in other cases we've had some free agent-type guys step up and have a little role on our team so far at this point. So I think when you look at our rookie class, I think we feel good about the guys that we've drafted or signed competing for spots on our roster and roles on our roster."

I am happy with this rookie class. Smith looks like a legit franchise T. Murray and Bailey look like longterm starters, but to make this a really great draft Carter and Arkin are going to have to be solid starters. I am not complaining though.

Houck was on the radio and mentioned Arkin. Said he just wasnt ready physicially and needed the year in the weight room to devleop his core and leg strength but they are extremely high on him.

It still bothers me that he did not see the field. I remain skeptical about him because if there is one OL position that you should be able to translate to right away it is G. I hope he works out, we need it.

If you arnt physically strong enough, you arnt physically strong enough. He needs time in a real strength program.

You could see from his clips that he obviously was pretty skilled at his position.

Maybe we wouldnt need both (which would be ideal)

I would definitely try to upgrade one of the interior spots though whether it be via free agency or the draft.

It still makes no sense why someone is drafted in the 4th round knowing they won't see the field and then a guy in the 7th round gets selected and starts. Maybe we should not be targeting "projects" that need to develop in the 4th and look for guys who can play.

It's one thing to have upside but another to be a total project.

It happens all the time. Rookie free agents start sometimes.

But it happens alot with big school OL who slip to later in the draft. they have extensive starting experience against good competition, but might be limited athletically or have very limited upside, therefore they slip in the draft.

In madden who are you gonna draft - the 83 OVR lineman with C potential or the 79 OVR lineman with A potential?

I rest my case.

I say we draft someone better in the 4th round than just a guy with "future potential"

if arkin and kowalski work out and then we draft decastro we would be in great shape up front.

another year with kosier until he gets outplayed and hopefully kowalski can win the center spot if we dont draft/sign another one.

we could have a young line with young capable backups inside for a handful of years if things work out.

if arkin doesnt work out, we can just go the green/stanback/aoa route and send him to the practice squad and make him a wr or quarterback.

guards usually make good corners anyway.

I wouldn't define Arkin as a "total project."

He just needs to get stronger is all.

Yes, all draft picks if they dont start from day one are clearly wasted picks.

Guys that take time to develop, like Jay Ratliff or Patrick Cryaton are wasted picks, and shouldnt have been used on other players.

Good grief.

All draft picks are gambles but as an organization we have a recent history of taking more risky picks in the mid-rounds (3rd, 4th, 5th). Personally, I feel this is Jerry trying to show he can "steal" a player. I'd like to see us take less draft risks until we are a perennial playoff team again.

Ratliff and Crayton were 7th rounders and they still contributed early. That's the point, over the years we've treated the 4th round as if it were the 7th round.

Do you really want me to bitch slap you with all the mid round picks that did little to nothing their first year or two?

I think not.
