Williams - Backup plan at Center

Backup plan at center

The Cowboys cut Cory Procter in the off-season, which was risky considering he was a backup guard/center. It left the team vulnerable at the center position behind starter Andre Gurode. The plan was to have starting left guard Kyle Kosier practice at the position during the preseason as an emergency replacement for Gurode. But Kosier injured his knee Wednesday and will get no reps during the preseason.

That means rookie free agent Phil Costa's chances of making the roster have improved. Travis Bright had been the second-team center, a position he had never played, but the Cowboys scraped that plan early in training camp when they figured out Bright was a better guard than center.

Costa is the team's best bet as the backup center, but there still is time to figure out a backup plan. Kevin Mawae, whom the Cowboys haven't been interested in, still is without a job. For now, though, it's Costa's chance to show the Cowboys he can get the job done.

"With young guys who haven't done it before, haven't played a lot of games, you're a little more reluctant,'' offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said. "Obviously, we tried to work him [Kosier] in practice at center wanted to get him some pre-season reps, but now we've got to adapt to it."
