The Cowboys recaptured the top spot they had for a season back in 2009. They lost the top spot in 2010. Precisely, it was the Green Bay Packer game that lost Wade Philips his job. First place was then occupied by the Bears, of all teams. They enjoyed a small renaissance due to their improved records and the simultaneous struggles of the Browns, Raiders, Dolphins, and Cowboys.
The Dolphins held the top spot from 2000 to 2008. Prior to that it went back and forth from the Browns to the Raiders. The Browns had a legendary winning record from their very inception. They started out with ten consecutive winning seasons followed by one losing season, followed by thirteen consecutive winning seasons, followed by a tie season.
The Cowboy's peak winning percentage was 64.26% after the 1983 season. Their all time winning percentage after Landry's last season in 1989 was 58.64. Due to the draft design, free agency, and salary caps, there is more parity in the league and so the lesser winning percentage today is still #1 in the league.
The highest all time winning percent attained by the Cowboys during the Jerry Jones era was 60.74% in 1996. The lowest was 57.14 in 2013. The Cowboys have an opportunity to create space between them and their closest competitors, the Packers, Bears, and Dolphins. The Ravens are also very close and can gain ground quickly due to their lesser number of games played.
It took until 2002, 69 years, for the Steelers to break even. Difficult to claim all time greatest with that statistic.
