Despite the catastrophic oil pollution released last year in the BP oil spill, which wrecked the economy of much of the US coastal area of the Gulf of Mexico, President Obama announced in his Weekly Address today his plan to "increase responsible domestic oil production" in the Gulf and Alaska.
In a statement which made no mention of the BP disaster directly, Obama spoke of the hardships on American consumers, facing much higher gasoline prices at the pump, in some cases Obama said paying more than $60 each time they fill their tank, and paying higher prices on everything because of the increase in gas prices.
Facing increasing displeasure from American drivers as well as increasing pressure from Republicans to expand domestic drilling, President Obama repeatedly emphasized that his version of expanded drilling would be done "responsibly", with a concern to protect "sensitive" areas.
Obama also announced his support for the elimination of $4 billion in taxpayer subsidies of oil companies, which will come to a vote in Congress this week, as well as reiterating that the USA needs to invest in "clean, renewable sources of energy that are the ultimate solution to high-gas prices."
