Version 4.0: 53-man roster projection
August, 9, 2010

By Tim MacMahon

The Hall of Fame Game forced an unfortunate change, unless the MRI on tight end John Phillips’ knee reveals surprisingly good news.

QUARTERBACKS (3): Tony Romo, Jon Kitna, Stephen McGee

McGee made progress in the preseason opener. His protection wasn’t good, but he displayed poise, toughness and the ability to make quick decisions.

RUNNING BACKS (3): Felix Jones, Marion Barber, Tashard Choice

Jones didn’t exactly earn more red-zone carries with his fumble inside the 5. Choice (seven carries, 41 yards) impressed running behind a ragtag backup line.

FULLBACKS (1): Deon Anderson

Phillips’ injury places more importance on the fullback position.

TIGHT ENDS (3): Jason Witten, Martellus Bennett, Scott Sicko

The Cowboys really need Bennett to be consistent and reliable now, assuming that the insurance policy of Phillips is gone for the season. They might search for an upgrade over Sicko.

WIDE RECEIVERS (6): Miles Austin, Roy Williams, Dez Bryant, Patrick Crayton, Kevin Ogletree, Sam Hurd

Jerry Jones might balk at paying $1.8 million to a receiver who isn’t in the rotation. However, Joe DeCamillis will fight to keep the Cowboys’ best special teams player.

OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Andre Gurode, Leonard Davis, Kyle Kosier, Marc Colombo, Doug Free, Alex Barron, Robert Brewster, Montrae Holland, Sam Young, Travis Bright

It’s tough to understand the plan to use Kosier at center in case Gurode goes down. Kosier has never played the position and has gotten precious few reps there.

NOSE TACKLES (2): Jay Ratliff, Josh Brent

Junior Siavii is a guy who can hold his ground in the middle. Brent has playmaking potential, as evidenced by his fumble recovery against the Bengals.

DEFENSIVE ENDS (4): Igor Olshansky, Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen, Jason Hatcher

Maybe the Cowboys opt to go heavy at this position with Spears coming back from a sprained MCL. If so, it opens the door for Marcus Dixon or Sean Lissemore.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS (5): DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Brandon Williams, Victor Butler, Steve Octavien

Williams and Butler were both impressive in the Hall of Fame Game. Octavien also had a sack, but he has a shot to stick due to special teams.

INSIDE LINEBACKERS (4) Bradie James, Keith Brooking, Sean Lee, Jason Williams

The Cowboys hope Stephen Hodge, the sixth-round pick in 2009 who had microfracture knee surgery, is ready to practice when they report to Oxnard. He has special teams stud potential.

CORNERBACKS (4): Mike Jenkins, Terence Newman, Orlando Scandrick, Cletis Gordon

Gordon has seized hold of the fourth cornerback job, but he could be sidelined for awhile after straining his neck.

SAFETIES (5): Gerald Sensabaugh, Alan Ball, Michael Hamlin, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Barry Church

Pat Watkins (knee) better get back on the field soon. His job is in serious jeopardy. Undrafted rookie Danny McCray, who didn’t play much defense at LSU, is a special teams demon who Joe D. likes.

SPECIALISTS (3): Mat McBriar, David Buehler, L.P. Ladouceur

It would have been nice to see Buehler get a shot to kick a 53-yarder after he missed from 49. Wade Phillips opted to let McBriar pin the Bengals at the 1 instead. We know McBriar is great. They need to find out about Buehler in the preseason.

Yeah, Josh Brent is starting to wear on me.

Siavii's days are numbered.
