Position battle: J. Williams isn't ready
July, 29, 2010

By Tim MacMahon

SAN ANTONIO – Sean Lee and Jason Williams were expected to compete for the nickel linebacker job during training camp.

Lee, the rookie second-round pick, has been sidelined the last few days by a strained quadriceps muscle. But he’s still the heavy favorite to take over Bobby Carpenter’s role in passing situations.

Wade Phillips gushes about Williams’ speed, but the 2009 third-round pick frequently finds himself trailing tight ends or running backs by a couple of steps in pass coverage. Williams is not nearly as lost as he was during his rookie training camp, but he still doesn’t appear to be recognizing routes quickly enough to react on time.

“It’s going to take some work,” Phillips said. “He gets frustrated and we get frustrated when it isn’t perfect every time, but it’s getting closer.”

It’s getting closer to a lock that Lee will win the job, even as he sits out practices.
