53-man roster projection
July, 26, 2010

By Tim MacMahon

The first two days of camp have resulted in a couple of tweaks to our roster projection. Here's how we see it with about four weeks to go until the final decisions are made:

QUARTERBACKS (3): Tony Romo, Jon Kitna, Stephen McGee

McGee hasn’t done anything impressive during the first two days of practice, but camp arm Matt Nichols is no threat.

RUNNING BACKS (3): Felix Jones, Marion Barber, Tashard Choice

Marion Barber has slimmed down 10 pounds to 214. He looks quicker, but is that really a good thing for a back known as The Barbarian?

FULLBACKS (1): Chris Gronkowski

Undrafted tight end Scott Sicko, a good receiver who has been getting reps at fullback, is the biggest threat to “Cricket” Anderson.

TIGHT ENDS (3): Jason Witten, Martellus Bennett, Scott Sicko

Bennett is sidelined by a sprained ankle, but the front office is still high on the former second-round pick whose production hasn’t matched his potential.

WIDE RECEIVERS (5): Miles Austin, Roy Williams, Dez Bryant, Kevin Ogletree, Sam Hurd

Patrick Crayton has been his typical reliable self in the first three practices of camp. But that gets no guarantees from Jerry Jones. If he doesn’t have a clear role, he’ll probably get cut.

OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Andre Gurode, Leonard Davis, Kyle Kosier, Marc Colombo, Doug Free, Alex Barron, Robert Brewster, Montrae Holland, Travis Bright, Sam Young

The numbers game will determine whether they keep Brewster and Young or have to make a decision between the two.

NOSE TACKLES (2): Jay Ratliff, Josh Brent

Supplemental seventh-rounder Josh Brent will have to overcome a broken left hand to beat out Siavii, who was impressive Sunday.

DEFENSIVE ENDS (4): Igor Olshansky, Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen, Jason Hatcher

The Cowboys would probably be comfortable starting any of these four. The question is whether they go heavy at DE and keep either Marcus Dixon or Sean Lissemore.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS (4): DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Steve Octavien, Victor Butler

Steve Octavien made a lot of plays during the first two days, but he’s fighting an uphill battle to beat out either of the 2009 fourth-round picks.

INSIDE LINEBACKERS (4): Bradie James, Keith Brooking, Sean Lee, Jason Williams

I’ve been on the Stephen Hodge bandwagon all offseason, but I can’t be confident in his chances to stick on the roster as long as he’s on the physically unable to perform list.

CORNERBACKS (4): Mike Jenkins, Terence Newman, Orlando Scandrick, Cletus Gordon,l

Cletis Gordon entered camp with an edge over the other fourth corner prospects due to experience. But coaches are curious about the potential of Wall and McCann.

SAFETIES (5): Gerald Sensabaugh, Alan Ball, Michael Hamlin, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Barry Church

Church, an undrafted rookie, has a chance to be a cheaper version of Pat Watkins, who has hung around four years because of his special teams prowess. Church, who blocked three kicks as a senior, is a solid tackler who excelled on kick coverage teams in addition to being a four-time All-MAC safety at Toledo.

SPECIALISTS (4): Mat McBriar, David Buehler, L.P. Ladouceur. John Carney
