Leary To Undergo Scope; Status For NYG Opener Now In Doubt

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys' problems at the guard position have taken another hit.

Second-year pro Ron Leary is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday, a procedure that will put his chances of playing the Sept. 8 opener against the Giants at AT&T Stadium in jeopardy.

Leary sat out of Wednesday's walk-through practice in Oxnard, which put David Arkin running with the first-team again at left guard.

Leary had been working with the starters since he returned from a hamstring injury two weeks ago. Leary took every snap of the Aug. 5 game with the Dolphins in Canton, and also played into the second half against Oakland last week.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, the injury is to his right knee and not the left knee that scared off many teams from drafting Leary in 2012.

This injury further raises the question about the Cowboys' interest in veteran Brian Waters. The club has reached out to the 36-year old veteran who hasn't played since 2011. Waters, a five-time Pro Bowler apparently has interest in playing again, but doesn't appear to be in a hurry to join a training camp.

The Cowboys tried to sign veteran Brandon Moore last week but the former New York Jet standout decided not to reunite with coach Bill Callahan and chose to stay retired.

Don't forget about veteran Nate Livings, who also had a knee scope two weeks ago and has a shot to be ready by the start of the season.

For Saturday's game in Arizona, the Cowboys are expected to start Arkin at left guard and Mackenzy Bernadeau on the right side.

It may only be for a quarter but Darnell Dockett is going to be all over Romo.

Jones can tell Moore he can use the private jet to go see the family/fly them out.

Waters is just waiting for TC to be over.

At this point you're almost forced to make a move. Will we? Who the fuck knows. We'll probably end up bringing in a scrub or two.

Its not bad luck when crappy players get injured.

Leary hasn't proven himself to be a crappy player yet, and he might actually (hopefully) be pretty good. But Arkin, Livings, Mackenzie, etc... they're all garbage.

We shouldn't even be in this position.

EXACTLY! This is what happens when you don't make OL a priority, because we needed a TE so much more, that he is now 3rd on the depth chart. Of course Escobar will eventually be promoted over Hanna, but not because he earned it but rather to justify his draft position.

And if they weren't injured, the others were bums and had no business drafting.

What is more tragic is that we are in such sorry shape that this guy being out is disturbing.

When a player who at best would have been a middle round draft pick goes down...a team with any sense would have a ready replacement.

Not us because we are the league's absolute worst at evaluating the OL.

And a fucking GM/owner that is in constant denial because he's always trying to save face.

We've been damn lucky overall this preseason. We've lost, what one backup defensive lineman. Teams around the league are losing multiple starters at important positions like left tackle.

People making a big deal out of nothing. It's a fucking scope. Dude will be out a couple of games MAX, he might not even miss one game.

If this ensures that we land waters, great!

This one sucks. Now you have to leaky holes to fill. I don’t understand why they had him playing the entire 1st game, then played him late into the 2nd quarter in the second. Give him some rest if you know he has bad wheels. Well the guard position is once again going to sink the team. Sucks because you could have addressed the issue with your second round pick.
