IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys have added center Kevin Kowalski to the 53-man roster.

Kowalski opened the year on the physically unable to perform list after a severe case of ankle tendinitis that required surgery in training camp. He did not take part in the offseason program or training camp and only returned to practice last week.

With injuries to Phil Costa (ankle) and Ryan Cook (knee), it is possible Kowalski could be on the 46-man roster Sunday against Cleveland as a backup to Mackenzy Bernadeau.

Kowalski made the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and played in 11 games. The Cowboys like his ability to play guard and center. If he is active, the Cowboys are taking a little bit of a risk since he has practiced only six times this season. They had another week in which to decide to call him up but made the move Saturday.

To make room for Kowalski, the Cowboys put safety Matt Johnson on injured reserve.

Johnson’s rookie season was a complete wash because of recurring hamstring injuries. He missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury, then in his only preseason game performance he hurt his other hamstring. During that rehab he hurt his back and just as he was about to play in his first game, he reinjured his left hamstring.

UPDATE: The Cowboys have played Johnson on IR designated for return, however, he could only see game action if the team makes the playoffs. Per the new injured reserve rule, Johnson will have to miss six weeks and cannot play in a game for eight weeks.

Middy bet $50 that Johnson would go on IR. His hot streak continues.

I guess the whispers about Matt Johnson are true.

Dallas simply doesn't want to risk someone else picking him up.

They used the new IR designation on him?

For what? Just to say that they used it?
