Cowboys agree to contract with LB Justin Durant

The Cowboys have signed their first player of free agency.

Sort of.

The club has reached an agreement on a two-year contract with outside linebacker Justin Durant. The problem is the Cowboys have just slightly more than $100,000 to spend at the moment. That means Durant will have to wait to sign the deal until the club clears the necessary salary cap room. He tweeted Tuesday afternoon that is is time for him to “learn that South Dallas Swag.”

Durant was one of three players to visit Valley Ranch on Monday. The others were safeties Michael Huff and Will Allen.

The team’s needs at safety appear to override that of outside linebacker. But Durant is a solid player who has started the past two seasons in Detroit and has started a total of 60 games in his six seasons in the NFL. He is strong against the run and is only 27.

The philosophy with Durant is similar to the Cowboys did with Dan Connor last season. The club signed Connor as insurance in case Bruce Carter wasn’t ready to claim the starting job.

The Cowboys hope Kyle Wilber will claim the starting outside linebacker job next to Sean Lee and Bruce Carter in 2013. If he doesn’t, Durant gives them a proven option ahead of Wilber and Alex Albright for the job.

When you give up 200 yards rushing in a win or go home game it's kind of important to get Better there.
Scoring more points than the opposing team helps too. 18 points or roughly 2.5 TDs per game has been the average offensive TDs per game since that one 2007 banner year. Watching Jim Haslett send the same blitz on every play with no strategic adjustment was equally frustrating in a win or go home game. Maybe Durant can both stop opposing RBs and when he not on the field, he can walk up and slap the RHG in the back of the head to tell him that most of the 32 NFL coaches in the National Football league don't keep calling the same failing plays, expecting different results.

Everyone but Jerry can see this will be Garrett's last year. He's too much of an idiot to get any better.

The same thing happened with TO. Everyone knew what would eventually happen but Jerry.

Cowboys have officially signed LB Justin Durant to 2-year deal. To get under the cap, the club re-negotiated the contract of QB Kyle Orton

What exactly are we accomplishing here? Seems like we are spinning our wheels.

We'll be doing the same shit next year and the year after.

We've been doing it the past 10 years.

When did shit hit the fan where we had like $20 Million in dead money, 2001?

Whenever there's no fear of losing your job you can draw up as many shitty contracts as you like.

Broaddus Gives Quick Scouting Report On Newly-Signed Durant

Posted 1 hour ago

Bryan Broaddus Football Analyst/ScoutFollow

IRVING, Texas – For the last two days, I’ve been on the road at two different Pro Days, watching the prospects at Texas and then SMU on Wednesday. In the last two weeks, I’ve seen guys at TCU and Alabama as well.
And not to mention the hours of tape I’ve watched on these college prospects as we get ready for the NFL Draft in a month.
But I got some time to check out the newest linebacker the Cowboys signed Wednesday. Detroit’s Justin Durant is an active player who gets to the ball, evident by his 103 tackles last year.
I studied two games from last year and here’s my scouting report on Justin Durant:

Games Studied: San Francisco, Green Bay

Nice take on…used his hands well to handle the wham block….some pop and strength at the point…can hold the point…works hard to beat the cut off block…has the nose to shoot the gap when he reads the play and sees the opportunity to make a play….played with awareness…not fooled on scheme…is a wrap up tackler in the hole…physical player…will work down the line...doesn’t stay blocked…not much in coverage…zone drops only…never saw him in man coverage…was off the field in nickel

situations…when on the field didn’t pedal well…too tall and stiff….did not see a burst…worried about that…much better player against the run than what I saw with the pass and the Lions must have felt the same way in which they played him….like him in the fit as a Sam linebacker that can take on blocks, not give up the corner and make plays with awareness when the ball comes at him….had 103 tackles in 2012….believe he will compete with Alex Albright for the job….move allows the front office and coaches to take a look at Kyle Wilber most likely as the weak side defensive end….will be 28 years old in Week 3….physically a nice looking player….good ability against the run.
