The Jets will shed the salaries of three big-money veterans and finally give up hope on one of the biggest draft busts in recent years.

The team plans to release right tackle Damien Woody, nose tackle Kris Jenkins and outside linebacker Jason Taylor--all starters--and reserve outside linebacker Vernon Gholston this week, according to the New York Daily News. Team officials already have notified the players.

"I want to thank the Jets and all the fans out there ... it was a great ride!" Woody tweeted Monday.

Team officials told the Daily News that the team could try to re-sign the four to reduced salaries.

Gholston, the sixth overall pick in 2008, never established himself as a reliable player at outside linebacker or defensive end. He recorded 42 tackles (24 solo) and no sacks in three seasons. He was due a $2.6 million roster bonus and had a base salary of $555,000.

Woody, 33, helped bookend one of the NFL's top offensive lines but missed the final three regular-season games because of an Achilles' tendon injury. He had base salaries of $3.35 million for 2011 and $3.1 million for 2012. The team is expected to have Wayne Hunter and Vlad Ducasse compete for the job in camp.

Jenkins, who turns 32 in August, is one of the league's top nose tackles but has had trouble staying healthy in recent years. He sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 1. Jenkins had a $1 million roster bonus due soon with a $3.75 million base salary.

Taylor, 36, signed last offseason as the Jets loaded up on veterans for a Super Bowl run. He played in every game, recording five sacks, two forced fumbles and a safety. He said after the AFC championship game that he'd understand if the Jets wanted to let him go. Taylor was set to earn $2.3 million with a $10 million negotiable roster bonus due in the offseason.

With so many DL deemed 1st round worthy and so many DL FA hitting the streets it might be a good indication which way a lot of teams are leaning come draft time.

Why is this team so afraid of cutting OLD, expensive, and WASTEFUL players, and yet teams like the Bears, Jets, and even the Redskins cut their players without batting an eye.

We don't have a lot of old players and how old do you think Peppers, Briggs and Urlacher are? All over 30.
