Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who is still recovering from the foot fracture he suffered in the spring, said Sunday that a return midway through next month “sounds about right,” and his rehab is exactly where the Giants expected, Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News reports.

“Definitely,” he said. “No setbacks, everything is going the way we planned. We’re just sticking to the things that doctors and trainers told us to do.”

That plan had Nicks making incremental improvements on Sunday. While his teammates practiced at the University of Albany, Nicks worked through some light running drills. He was able to sprint forward, stop quickly and backpedal across the field. He also did some light change-of-direction work.

He’s been running on the grass the past few days, he said, and he plans to start cutting hard soon.

“There’s no pain,” he added. “I ran on it before (and) the next norming, it responded very well. There’s no pain. It’s just a matter of being smart about it.”

They should have him skip the opener just to be safe.
