ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith is the latest Giant to suffer an injury, straining his groin during practice Friday.

The team's top receiver said he will undergo an MRI but he was optimistic that the injury isn't anything serious.

"Nah, I don't think so, but we got to do an MRI. [So] we'll see," Smith said after coming off the field. "Just made a normal move and I just heard it, like kind of grab."

After injuring the groin, Smith was examined on the sideline. He watched the second half of practice. The receiver said he was feeling better and he signed autographs for fans.

The team cannot afford to lose Smith, who is coming off the best season of any receiver in Giants history. He emerged as Eli Manning's go-to-guy with 107 receptions for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns, shattering Amani Toomer's franchise record for receptions (82).

The fourth-year receiver was enjoying a strong camp and caught a few deep passes over top cornerback Corey Webster earlier this week.

The Giants' top three wide receivers are all nursing injuries. Hakeem Nicks is coming off offseason toe surgery and he hyperextended his right knee in practice Tuesday. Nicks practiced Friday, as did Mario Manningham, who returned after missing a few days of practice with a groin injury.
