Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas tears ACL
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 22, 2011, 9:57 PM EDT

One of the most underrated and indispensable players on the Giants appears lost for the season.

Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas went to the locker room late in the second quarter after getting leg whipped by teammate Jason Pierre-Paul. Thomas was able to walk off the field, but ESPN’s Suzy Kolber got word from Giants coach Tom Coughlin that Thomas tore his ACL.

Thomas had steadily become New York’s most consistent and complete cornerback and was heading into a contract year. He seemed primed for a big year. With first round pick Prince Amukamara out until October, the Giants are suddenly thin at cornerback.

It’s a very tough blow for the Giants defense, seemingly made worse because it happened just a few plays before halftime when the Giants starters would come out of the game.

The Giants suffered a major blow on Monday night when cornerback Terrell Thomas tore the ACL in his right knee with 30 seconds remaining of the first half of Monday's preseason game against the Chicago Bears according to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star Ledger. Thomas will be lost for the season.

In a normal season, Tom Coughlin would have pulled his starters by that point. But thanks to the lockout, nothing is normal, and Coughlin was trying to make up for lost offseason time by giving his key players more time on the field.

“That’s the part of the game that just makes you shake your head,” Coughlin said, adding: “We’ll have to address it. We’ll just have to make some decisions, whether or not there are any (free agents) out there that we can bring in or shuffle some guys around.”

Huge loss for them.

But they do have the pass rush to ease the pain.

Justin Tuck on Thomas:

“He was pretty much emerging himself as one of the elite corners in the league — a young kid that you could just tell his confidence level was tremendous coming into camp, probably our No. 1 corner,” Tuck said of the former second-round pick, who had five interceptions in each of the past two seasons. “He’s going to be missed because you don’t just replace a guy like that, as far as his instincts, as far as his athletic ability, as far as his knowledge of how we play the game. You could just see he was on another level (this year).”

Also worth noting:

Now Thomas, who also tore ligaments in his right knee while at USC in 2005, will see no more playing time this year.

And:

That’s the problem: they’ve already had to shuffle some cornerbacks because rookie first-round pick Prince Amukamara broke his foot early in training camp and is expected to miss another 6-8 weeks, while veteran Bruce Johnson tore his Achilles tendon.

And making matters worse was Brian Witherspoon, a pleasant surprise for the team in camp so far, was carted off with a knee injury last night. Witherspoon said the belief is it’s a sprained medial collateral ligament but the full extent of the injury won’t be known until further tests are completed today.

Giants will audition corners Wed w/Thomas lost for season but have told agents seeking vet-min type split contracts. So w/that limited ...

Earning capacity, some invites, like former Colt Kelvin Hayden, who you guys had asked me about, are declining the workout offer

Whitherspoon has a Torn ACL. So that puts NY down to what... 1 CB and a couple of fast LBs in coverage a this point?? Looks like Kelvin HAyden is about to get paid. Or Philly is going to fleece NY for draft picks and trade them Samuels.
