Former Cowboy Jay Novacek: Tony Romo 'hasn't had the team' to win a Super Bowl

Despite not strapping on a Dallas Cowboys helmet since 1996, former five-time Pro Bowl tight end Jay Novacek still has plenty to say about the current state of the franchise.

While recently speaking with media members at the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino in New Mexico , Novacek discussed the NFL lockout, Tony Romo being the team’s starting QB and Jerry Jones’ impact on the league.

Novacek, who played six seasons in Dallas, seems to be a fan of keeping Romo as the franchise quarterback.

“Romo’s an outstanding quarterback,” he told ElPasoinc.com before a luncheon at the KROD Sports and Health Expo. “Who would you trade him for outside of the few elite quarterbacks now playing? Winning Super Bowls is a team effort. All players have to contribute. He just hasn’t had the team.”

Jones is the person responsible with putting the right players around Romo and Novacek has experience working under the Cowboys owner and general manager.

“He won three Super Bowls,” Novacek said. “How many NFL owners have done that? Has he made mistakes? Yes. Who hasn’t? But he’s done a lot for the National Football League.”

In regards to the current work stoppage in the NFL, the three-time Super Bowl champion sounded optimistic.

“I’m sure it’ll be settled before the season begins,” he said. “There’s a long time between now and then.”
