Smith's ‘heart goes out' to struggling Cowboys

Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith has talked tough about his former team in the past, but he made it clear Wednesday night that all he's offering the Dallas Cowboys these days is his support.
“Nobody expected them to go through this,” Smith said. “It's a tough gig, and I feel for them.”

Dallas, which began the season as a trendy Super Bowl pick, is 1-3 and in the NFC East cellar.

Speaking at a promotional event at a local hotel, Smith said his “heart goes out” to the club he helped lead to three Super Bowl wins in the 1990s.

“What they are going through is not easy,” said Smith, the NFL's career rushing leader. “You've got writers and everybody tugging and hanging around corners trying to get little sly stories here and there to continue the dissension. And it's not a good place to be in from a players' standpoint, from a coaches' standpoint, and even from an owner's standpoint.”

Smith didn't rule out a turnaround, but he stressed it won't happen unless there's a reduction in turnovers, especially in the red zone.

“We need to produce points in some way, shape or form,” he said. “Obviously, you want seven, but three could be the difference in the game.”

Smith was criticized by several players after he picked the Cowboys to go 7-9 last season. Dallas was 11-5 and got its first playoff win since the 1996 season
