New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said Eli Manning is in New York City undergoing a battery of tests to make sure the quarterback is fine after suffering a gash on his forehead on Monday night.

Coughlin did not have any additional information on Manning's status because the quarterback was at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan at the time of the coach's conference call with reporters. But Coughlin said he texted Manning, who didn't complain about pain the day after the quarterback needed 12 stitches to close a three-inch gash.

"The normal discomfort that a guy goes through when he has stitches ... he didn't talk too much about pain," Coughlin said in a conference call. "I don't have a whole lot of information because anytime you have an injury which is a head injury, you do all kinds of tests and they are in the process of doing that right now."

The Giants were off on Tuesday after beating the Jets 31-16 on Monday night. Coughlin did expect Manning to travel to Albany on Tuesday night as the team resumes its training camp on Wednesday.

The Giants' medical staff is trying to figure out how Manning can practice with a helmet on since the gash is on his forehead and that could impact the healing of the wound. Coughlin would not speculate as to whether he will have his starting quarterback this Saturday in a preseason game against the Steelers.

"We will wait and hear what the doctors have to say once all the examinations are concluded," Coughlin said. "The idea for me going forward was how we are going to make it so that he can practice and play with the stitches. Naturally there is concern there from the doctor's standpoint because just the nature of where the helmet sits according to where the stitches sit could create a problem in terms of healing."

The team said Manning did not suffer a concussion or show any symptoms of a concussion Monday night after he was drilled by Jets linebacker Calvin Pace from behind. Manning had audibled out of a running play but did not tell his running back, Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs came up the middle for the handoff and as Manning dropped back to throw a fade toward Ramses Barden, Jacobs collided with his quarterback.

Manning's chin strap was pushed above his chin when he hit Jacobs' shoulder pad and his helmet came flying off when Pace hit him from behind, sending Manning toward Jets safety Jim Leonhard's face mask. Even though Manning said he was fine on Monday and insisted he could have returned to the game if needed, the Giants want to be careful with their franchise quarterback.

Coughlin also said linebacker Chase Blackburn has an MCL knee injury and will be out for an extended amount of time. Blackburn sprained his knee on Monday but Coughlin said no surgery is needed.

Barden also is dealing with a lower back issue.

I would say he won't play seeing he has stitches.

It would probably be uncomfortable to put his helmet on and off.
